Overview
Atlantic Press Kiadó is a Hungarian book publisher founded in 2007 as the publishing arm of Atlantic Kft., a Budapest-based communications and PR company established in 1990. The publisher's stated mission is to stimulate the reappearance of high-quality non-fiction in Hungarian bookshops and to publish demanding entertainment books by Hungarian authors that are missing from the catalogues of publishers working mainly with foreign material. It operates under the slogan 'Csak a jó könyv' ('Only good books'), committing to publish without genre restrictions but with strong quality control. Its consciously gap-filling publishing policy has resulted in its books being regularly distributed by Hungary's most respected book distributors, including Alexandra, Libri, Líra and Bookline. The founder and one of its authors, Bokor Pál, is known as a writer, journalist, filmmaker and literary translator. The publisher began operations at the end of 2007 and has enriched Hungarian publishing with titles such as the memoir 'Egy Polgár a nagyvilágban' by 96-year-old Polgár Dénes, and Bokor Pál's 'Barack Obama szupersztár', which was the first in Europe to draw an authentic yet Hungarian-eyed portrait of the 44th US president, followed by 'Obama - Az út Honolulutól a Fehér Házig és mindig tovább...'. Its specialities include political non-fiction, books on the world and aesthetics of film, and entertainment literature by Hungarian authors. As a relatively new player in the book market, Atlantic Press does not automatically exclude books from other genres if the manuscript meets the editorial team's professional creed and if publication promises a return on investment within a foreseeable time.
History
Atlantic Press Kiadó was founded in 2007 as the book publishing division of Atlantic Kft., a Budapest-based company established in 1990. For its first ten years, Atlantic Kft. operated as a press service and PR agency. Among other activities, it introduced HBO television to Hungary, served for several years as the press representative of the Hungarian Motion Picture Foundation and the Hungarian Film Festival, initiated and organised the World Meeting of Hungarian Filmmakers, and contributed to the success of numerous other cultural events. Thanks to its press service, Atlantic provides media background for Atlantic Press Kiadó's books. The founder and one of its authors, Bokor Pál, is known as a writer, journalist, filmmaker and literary translator. He has written ten books and, as editor, directed the publication of Magyar Hírlap Könyvek from 1990 to 1993. Later, from 2005 to 2007, he was the editor-in-chief of Alexandra Könyvkiadó's six-volume classic series 'A krimi gyöngyszemei'. The publisher began operations at the end of 2007 and enriched Hungarian publishing with titles such as the memoir 'Egy Polgár a nagyvilágban' by 96-year-old Polgár Dénes, and Bokor Pál's 'Barack Obama szupersztár', which was the first in Europe to draw an authentic yet Hungarian-eyed portrait of the 44th US president, followed by 'Obama - Az út Honolulutól a Fehér Házig és mindig tovább...', which covered the first phase of the president's work. The publisher's specialities include political non-fiction, books on the world and aesthetics of film, and entertainment literature by Hungarian authors. As a relatively new player in the book market, Atlantic Press does not automatically exclude books from other genres if the manuscript meets the editorial team's professional creed and if publication promises a return on investment within a foreseeable time.
