Overview
Atkins was a British engineering and professional services firm founded in London in 1938 by Sir William Atkins as W. S. Atkins & Partners. Although it began as a civil and structural engineering consultancy, the business developed into a broad multidisciplinary organization covering engineering design, architecture, urban planning, transportation, project and programme management, environmental services, energy, digital consultancy and business advisory work. The firm expanded substantially after the Second World War, when reconstruction and industrial development created demand for specialist engineering expertise. Its early assignments included planning and engineering work for the expansion of Port Talbot Steelworks. In the 1950s, Atkins participated in the development of Berkeley Nuclear Power Station, one of the United Kingdom's early civilian nuclear facilities. It later contributed to major infrastructure programmes including the Toronto subway, Drax Power Station and the Channel Tunnel. These projects helped establish the company's reputation in complex civil, structural, transportation and energy engineering. Atkins moved away from direct contracting in 1950 and concentrated on design engineering and project management. Over subsequent decades it broadened its geographic and sector coverage. Its work included buildings, airports, highways, railways, nuclear facilities, oil and gas infrastructure, aerospace engineering, defence programmes, environmental services and urban development. It also became involved in high-speed rail planning and design, including work in Denmark and Sweden, and provided engineering analysis for Airbus aircraft including the A380, A320, A350 XWB and A400M. The company became a public company in 1996, when it was admitted to the London Stock Exchange as W. S. Atkins plc. It acquired Faithful+Gould in the same year, strengthening its cost and project management capabilities, and later acquired Hanscomb and the North American consultancy PBS&J. During the 2000s and 2010s it continued to expand through acquisitions in energy, oil and gas, nuclear engineering and North American infrastructure services. Its notable assignments included engineering and design support for the 2012 London Olympics, the Burj Al Arab, Dubai and Middle Eastern transport programmes, United States infrastructure projects and international rail systems. By 2016, Atkins was described as the United Kingdom's largest engineering consultancy and one of the world's largest design firms. It had approximately 18,000 employees, around 300 offices in 29 countries and projects in more than 150 countries. The company operated across infrastructure, transportation, buildings, aerospace, defence, environment, water, energy and digital services, with the motto "Plan, Design, Enable." In 2017, Canadian engineering group SNC-Lavalin agreed to acquire Atkins for approximately £2.1 billion. Shareholders approved the transaction in June, completion took place on 3 July, and Atkins was removed from the London Stock Exchange the following day. It became a business sector within SNC-Lavalin. The parent group was renamed AtkinsRéalis in 2023, preserving Atkins as a major operating brand. The standalone listed company therefore ceased to exist, while the Atkins name continued within the larger engineering and professional services group.
History
Atkins originated in 1938, when Sir William Atkins established W. S. Atkins & Partners in London. Atkins had previously acquired London Ferro-Concrete and continued to oversee both businesses until 1950. The new consultancy initially operated from Westminster and concentrated on civil and structural engineering design. During the Second World War, it undertook technically demanding work despite wartime constraints, including development of a patented anti-aircraft turret. Postwar reconstruction created the conditions for rapid expansion. In 1945, Atkins was invited to advise on the proposed enlargement of Port Talbot Steelworks and subsequently acted as civil and structural design engineer. In 1950, the company abandoned contracting activities in order to focus on design engineering and project management. During the 1950s it participated in the engineering of Berkeley Nuclear Power Station, helping establish a long-term presence in the nuclear sector. In the 1960s, it provided tunnelling design for Toronto's developing subway system, and in the 1970s it supported construction of Drax Power Station. Atkins contributed to major transportation and built-environment programmes during the 1980s and 1990s. Its work on the Channel Tunnel formed part of the engineering effort behind the cross-Channel connection completed in 1994. The company also worked on the Burj Al Arab hotel, completed in 1999. In 1996 it became a publicly traded company on the London Stock Exchange as W. S. Atkins plc and acquired Faithful+Gould, a cost and project management consultancy. The business later adopted the shorter Atkins trading name in 2002 and acquired Hanscomb, another construction consultancy. The early 2000s brought financial and management pressure. The share price fell sharply in 2002, and chief executive Robin Southwell and finance director Ric Piper left the business. Keith Clarke, who joined from Skanska, succeeded Southwell as chief executive. Atkins also encountered difficulties through its investment in Metronet, a London Underground maintenance company that failed in 2007. During the following decade, Atkins pursued international diversification. It acquired PBS&J in 2010, significantly increasing its North American presence. It bought the oil and gas business of Pöyry in 2011, acquired Houston Offshore Engineering in 2014 and purchased the Projects, Products and Technology segment of EnergySolutions in 2016. These transactions strengthened the company's oil and gas, energy and nuclear capabilities. Atkins also developed aerospace work with Rolls-Royce and Airbus, including structural analysis for several Airbus aircraft. Transportation remained a central activity. The company advised on the business case and transport effects of high-speed rail in the United Kingdom, was selected in 2011 to engineer a proposed high-speed line between Copenhagen and the German border, and was appointed in 2019 to plan Sweden's first high-speed main line. In 2009, Atkins became an official engineering design services provider for the 2012 London Olympics, contributing to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and related facilities. By 2016, Atkins had approximately 18,000 employees in 300 offices across 29 countries and had delivered projects in more than 150 countries. Its activities covered infrastructure, buildings, transport, aerospace, defence, energy, water, environment and digital consulting. In April 2017, SNC-Lavalin made a bid of approximately £2.1 billion. The transaction was approved by Atkins shareholders in June and completed on 3 July 2017. Atkins was delisted on 4 July and became a sector within SNC-Lavalin. The parent organization was renamed AtkinsRéalis in 2023, while Atkins continued as a principal operating brand rather than an independent listed company.
