Overview
Atelier Slabbinck, founded in 1903 by Hendrik Slabbinck, is a company with own production in Bruges, specializing in liturgical textiles. The company has been in service of liturgy since 1903 and has supplied vestments for papal visits and diocesan sets.
History
Atelier Slabbinck was founded in 1903 when Hendrik Slabbinck became a 'master in the guild of gold embroiderers' and started an atelier in the attic of his parental home. After the First World War, contacts were established in Germany, Austria, Italy, Canada, and the USA, focusing on export from the beginning. In 1923, the first black-and-white catalog was offered. In 1924, Maurice Slabbinck, second generation, joined his father as an apprentice. During the Second World War, to keep 16 employees in Bruges, many hand-embroidered works were executed without a client, mostly copies of prestigious artworks, still in possession of the Slabbinck family. In 1961, Marc Slabbinck, third generation, joined the company, followed by his brother Dirk in 1963. Hendrik Slabbinck died in 1965. In 1973, the first color catalog was printed. In 1974, the company moved to the Lieven Bauwensstraat in the industrial zone Waggelwater in Bruges. In 1999, the fourth generation (Mirabel, Viktor, and Mathias Slabbinck) joined. In 2001, Slabbinck Home Creations was started.
