Overview

Astro Mustika HD was a Malaysian pay-television channel operated within the Astro television platform. It was introduced on 20 May 2012 as a dedicated high-definition outlet for Malay-oriented programming. Before its launch, Astro’s Malay HD availability had largely been limited to selected events and festival broadcasts on another channel, so Mustika HD represented a more regular HD destination for viewers of Astro’s Malay-language services. The channel took its name from the Mustika Pack, an Astro subscription package associated with Malay-language entertainment. At launch, it was carried on channel 134 and was primarily intended for subscribers to that package. For a limited introductory period, however, Astro subscribers who did not take the Mustika Pack could access the service without an additional package subscription; that arrangement lasted until 31 August 2012. Its programming was drawn mainly from the Malay channels and services included in the Mustika portfolio, rather than from a completely independent commissioning or production operation. Mustika HD’s role changed as Astro expanded its high-definition channel offering. The launch of Maya HD in June 2013 provided another HD service aimed at Malay viewers, making Mustika HD more closely tied to the Mustika Pack and reducing the extent to which it carried content outside that package. The channel continued to serve as an HD showcase for selected Astro Malay entertainment, but its schedule increasingly concentrated on programming associated with Astro Citra and Astro Bella. A further change came on 11 May 2017, when Astro Warna content moved to its own HD channel. This left Mustika HD with a narrower programming identity, centered principally on Astro Citra and Astro Bella material. On 1 October 2018, Astro reorganized the service: Mustika HD moved from channel 134 to channel 126 and was renamed Astro Citra HD. Astro Bella ceased transmission at the same time and was replaced on channel 125 by Naura. The rebranding ended Mustika HD as a standalone channel name, although its HD programming function continued through Astro Citra HD. Mustika HD was therefore a transitional channel in Astro’s development of Malay-language high-definition television. Its significance lay less in a separate consumer product range than in consolidating HD access to programming from Astro’s Malay entertainment portfolio and testing a channel structure linked to package-based distribution. The service is now defunct as a branded channel, with its role absorbed into the Astro Citra HD service.

History

Astro Mustika HD was launched in Malaysia on 20 May 2012 on channel 134. It was created to provide a more regular high-definition outlet for Astro’s Malay-language television content. Before the service existed, HD access to Astro’s Malay programming had mainly been associated with selected events or festivals carried on another Astro channel, rather than with a permanent Malay entertainment service. The channel was initially linked to the Mustika Pack and carried programming drawn from the Malay-language channels and services included in that package. Its name reflected this relationship. During the initial launch period, Astro subscribers who had not subscribed to the Mustika Pack could view the channel without taking the package, but this temporary access ended on 31 August 2012. Thereafter, Mustika HD was principally positioned as a package-based HD service. Astro’s expansion of its Malay HD portfolio altered the channel’s role. Maya HD launched in June 2013 and gave Astro another high-definition outlet aimed at Malay viewers. As the channel structure developed, Mustika HD became more closely focused on content associated with the Mustika Pack and only rarely carried programming outside that package. Its schedule included HD versions of material from Astro’s Malay entertainment services, particularly programming connected with Astro Citra and Astro Bella. On 11 May 2017, Astro Warna programming moved to a separate HD channel. This removed one of the more prominent content groupings from Mustika HD and left the service with a narrower focus. Astro subsequently reorganized its Malay-language channel lineup. On 1 October 2018, Mustika HD moved to channel 126 and was renamed Astro Citra HD. At the same time, Astro Bella ceased transmission and its former channel position, channel 125, was taken by Naura. The rebranding marked the end of Mustika HD as an active channel name. Its function was not entirely discontinued; instead, the HD service was integrated into the Astro Citra brand. Mustika HD is consequently best understood as a former Astro channel and an intermediate stage in the company’s development of package-based, Malay-language high-definition television in Malaysia.
