Overview
astragon Sales & Services GmbH was a German video game publisher and the retail-coordination arm of the astragon group. It originated as rondomedia Marketing & Vertriebs GmbH, founded in April 1998 by André Franzmann. The company initially focused on distributing casual games and budget re-releases in the German market, notably through a partnership with US publisher eGames. Over time it expanded its portfolio through collaborations with Atari, Ubisoft, THQ, Square Enix, and Daedalic, often handling budget-range marketing in Germany. From 2008 onward, the company increasingly shifted toward simulation games, including construction simulators and the Farming Simulator published by astragon and developed by Giants Software. Later key titles included Firefighting Simulator, Bus Simulator, and Police Simulator. In July 2015, rondomedia was renamed astragon Sales & Services GmbH as part of a group restructuring that unified the two publishers under the astragon brand. The former astragon Software GmbH became astragon Entertainment GmbH, concentrating development and publishing activities. In July 2021, the parent and subsidiary were merged into astragon Entertainment GmbH. In January 2022, the merged company was acquired by UK-based Team17 plc for €100 million, described as the largest exit in the German games industry in years. Since then, astragon has operated as a wholly owned subsidiary headquartered in Düsseldorf. The astragon Sales & Services GmbH entity itself ceased to exist as a separate legal entity after the 2021 merger, but its legacy continues within astragon Entertainment, which remains a leading German publisher of working simulation games.
History
astragon Sales & Services GmbH traces its origins to rondomedia Marketing & Vertriebs GmbH, founded in April 1998 by André Franzmann. The company initially focused on distributing casual games and budget re-releases in the German market. In 1998, it partnered with US publisher eGames to publish titles such as eGames Mahjongg Master in Germany. The cooperation was extended in 2003, by which time rondomedia had distributed around one million eGames titles, about a third of which were various versions of Mahjongg Master. Further partnerships followed with Atari, Ubisoft, THQ, Square Enix, Daedalic, and others, for whom rondomedia often handled budget-range marketing in Germany (Best-of series). From 2008, the company increasingly focused on simulation games, including construction simulators and the Farming Simulator published by astragon and developed by Giants Software. Later key titles included Firefighting Simulator, Bus Simulator, and Police Simulator. In the trade press, these games initially received little attention, as they could not compete with major productions in production value or gameplay design. As of 2010, they were relatively inexpensive productions with sales typically between 50,000 and 250,000 copies before budget re-releases. However, they have since become bestsellers, selling millions of copies. From 2012, the company began scaling back its budget re-release and licensed distribution business to focus more on international marketing of its own titles, especially in the simulation sector. In January 2014, Kristina Klooss, previously co-managing director, took sole responsibility, while André Franzmann took on an advisory role and remained a shareholder. At the end of July 2015, the rondomedia group was restructured: the name of the subsidiary astragon was chosen as the future name of the group. Rondomedia was renamed astragon Sales & Services GmbH, which mainly coordinated the group's retail activities. The astragon Software GmbH became astragon Entertainment GmbH, bundling development and publishing activities. A new company logo and CI were introduced at Gamescom 2015. In July 2021, the parent and subsidiary were merged into astragon Entertainment GmbH. In January 2022, the merged company was acquired by UK-based Team17 plc for €100 million, the largest exit in the German games industry in years. Since then, the company has continued as a 100% subsidiary headquartered in Düsseldorf. The astragon Sales & Services GmbH entity ceased to exist as a separate legal entity after the 2021 merger.
