AstaReal AB

AstaReal AB is a Swedish biotechnology company that produces natural astaxanthin and consumer health products. It is a subsidiary of Fuji Chemical Industries Co., Ltd. and part of the AstaReal Group. The company was founded in 1988 and is known as the world's first to commercially produce natural astaxanthin.

AstaReal AB's story began in the 1980s at Uppsala University in Sweden, where a research group explored the potential of microalgae. The company was founded in 1988. Initially focused on producing astaxanthin for aquaculture, by the mid-1990s the focus shifted to high-purity products for human consumption. The first production facility was established in 1994 in Gustavsberg, Sweden. In 1995, Astaxin® was launched as the first nutritional supplement for humans containing natural astaxanthin.
