Overview

The Associazione Nazionale Ex Internati nei Lager nazisti (A.N.E.I.) is an Italian association that represents military and civilian internees deported to Germany or elsewhere after 8 September 1943 by Nazi or Fascist authorities for refusing to collaborate. Founded in Turin on 29 April 1945, it was recognized by the State as a moral entity (Ente Morale) by D.P.R. no. 403 of 2 April 1948. Its legal headquarters is in Rome, and it operates through a national office and a network of local sections. The association preserves the memory of the Internati Militari Italiani (IMI), promotes knowledge of the internment experience, and maintains the Museo Nazionale dell'Internamento in Padua.

History

The idea of an association of Italian military internees emerged inside the Nazi camps toward the end of the Second World War, among those who wanted to work for a better homeland than the one they had left before 8 September 1943, to help one another overcome the traumas of the war years, to assist the neediest, and to remember those who had died. The Associazione Nazionale Ex Internati nei Lager nazisti was founded in Turin on 29 April 1945 and was recognized by the State as a moral entity (Ente Morale) by D.P.R. no. 403 of 2 April 1948. Starting from that past, ANEI seeks to project itself into the future by addressing young people and the social sphere, contributing to better coexistence through reconciliation and the goal of peace in respect for human dignity. ANEI was active internationally, particularly from the 1960s to the 1990s, as a member of the CIAPG (Confederazione Internazionale Ex Combattenti Prigionieri di Guerra), held consultative status at the United Nations, and was constantly present at the Council of Europe in Strasbourg to defend its moral principles and highlight the historic "no" of the IMI to dictatorships, wars, and the arms race.
