Overview

The Associazione Nazionale Archivistica Italiana (ANAI) is Italy's nationwide professional association of archivists, described in reference sources as the country's national archival association, in existence since 1949. It functions as a membership body for professional archivists and for people committed to the care of archives, and it operates through regional sections (sezioni regionali) that carry its work into local territory. Its activities centre on professional training and continuing education, publishing, and public advocacy on archival matters. ANAI's educational programme is one of its most visible activities: the association runs in-person and distance courses, study days and seminars aimed at widening members' competences and keeping them informed about developments in the archival profession. It also maintains a publishing arm, with titles such as "Le Muse in archivio" appearing under its imprint, and it produces periodical and news publications for the field. Membership is open both to professional archivists and to supporters, and the association provides information on how to join as a member or supporter. As a representative body, ANAI speaks publicly on questions affecting archives and documentary heritage. Its website carries news and statements on issues such as the condition of the Archivio comunale di Venezia at the Celestia complex, where the association followed with close attention proposals to convert the former monastery building, then used as the city archive depository, into university student housing. It also publicizes training events, for example webinars on general archival theory and practice in public administration. The association is governed by elected bodies, including a direttivo (board) and other social organs, and it maintains a consultative structure (Consulta ANAI). Its history is conventionally divided into phases: the founding period up to 1963, a second phase to 1985 marked by Italy's 1963 archival law, and a third phase continuing to the present, during which ANAI evolved from an association of state archives into one representing archives of all kinds across the country. It has hosted and organized major international archival gatherings, including the third International Congress on Archives in Florence in 1956 and the European Conference on Archives in Florence in 2001, and it created Archiexpo, the first event at which archives presented themselves to the public.

History

The Associazione Nazionale Archivistica Italiana (ANAI) is the nationwide archival association of Italy, in existence since 1949. An earlier attempt to found a national association of this kind failed at the end of the First World War, so the association was only established in 1949. The initiative came from Emilio Re, and the first congress was held as early as October of the founding year in Orvieto. The subsequent development is conventionally divided into three phases: the first reaching to 1963, the second to 1985, and the third continuing to the present. In the presidential office, Emilio Re was followed by Riccardo Filangeri and Leopoldo Sandri. In 1956 the association organized the third International Congress on Archives in Florence. The second phase, under the long presidency of Antonino Lombardo, was strongly shaped by the archival law passed in 1963. That law was intended to promote the transition from an administrative unit to a historical and cultural institution. With "Archivi e Cultura", the association had a corresponding journal as its official organ until 1985. After Lombardo's unexpected death, Antonio Saladino briefly succeeded him. In 1986 the association's congress took place in Piacenza, where Enrica Ormanni became president. In 1996 Isabella Orefice followed as the first woman president. During this period the association changed from an association of state archives into one representing all the archives of the country. From 1988 the archives were organized by vote into independent sezioni regionali, each of which now had its own self-organizing bodies for cultural initiatives. With "Archivi per la storia" a new association journal appeared, replacing "Archivi e Cultura". The specialist journal is now simply called "Archivi", and from 1993 "ANAI Notizie" was added three times a year, an information sheet that since 2006 has appeared as "Il Mondo degli Archivi" in cooperation with the competent ministry. Around the turn of the millennium the association's international contacts were intensified once more. The European Conference on Archives took place in Florence in 2001. In May 2003 the convention "La memoria del Cinema" was held, where archivists, librarians and conservation technicians exchanged views on questions of preserving cinematographic material. In 2006 and 2007 the Italian association organized Archiexpo, the first event at which archives presented themselves to the public. In January 2009 the multi-year project "Archivi della Moda del 900" was presented. Since 2015 Maria Guercio has been president. On its website the association presents its governing bodies, its regional sections, its training programme and its publishing activity, and it publishes news and statements on archival issues, including its close attention to the situation of the Archivio comunale di Venezia at the Celestia complex in Venice.
