History

AIRSC was founded on 8 September 1964 in the context of the Venice International Film Festival, on the initiative of Camillo Bassotto, Aldo Bernardini, Fausto Montesanti, Maria Adriana Prolo, Sergio Raffaelli, Nazzareno Taddei and Davide Turconi. It is a non-profit cultural association that promotes research and studies in cinema history, encouraging collective work on source retrieval and shared methodological criteria, facilitating the exchange of information and materials among members, publishing catalogues and repertoires, encouraging ties with similar foreign associations, and supporting initiatives aimed at scientific deepening of cinema history. Over the years AIRSC has contributed to defining methods and content of historical research in cinema and to the full appreciation of film as a historical and cultural asset. Its members have produced important research in history and historiography that has strengthened knowledge of Italian and world cinema, as well as work in the promotion, preservation and dissemination of silent and sound cinema, including the rescue of over two hundred rare silent films held in fiduciary deposit at the Cineteca Nazionale, whose catalogue has been published. Restored and duplicated by the association, these films are available in collaboration with public and private film archives for events and scholars. Since 1981 AIRSC has published «Immagine. Note di storia del cinema», a journal of in-depth study and new research, classified in fascia A by ANVUR. AIRSC also promotes "Storia e Storie", a study day organized in collaboration with the Cineteca di Bologna dedicated to new funds and new historical research.
