Overview
Associazione Botteghe del Mondo (Assobotteghe) is an Italian non-profit association that represents and coordinates the network of Botteghe del Mondo, the Italian fair trade shops. Founded in 1991, it is based in Reggio Emilia and acts as a national umbrella body for fair trade organisations, cooperatives and associations. Its statutory aims include promoting fair and dignified social development in both the Global South and North, safeguarding ethnic, cultural and religious differences, and challenging unjust international trade rules. Assobotteghe coordinates its members, supports the creation of new fair trade shops, and engages in advocacy with political and institutional bodies at local, national, European and international levels. It also runs awareness and information campaigns, producing materials for local shops. The association is a founding member of NEWS!, the European network of fair trade shops, through which it maintains links with similar organisations across Europe. It organises Tuttaunaltracosa, the national fair trade festival, first held in 1994 and now a three-day travelling event across Italy; Assobotteghe holds the festival's trademark. Membership figures have varied over time: the official website cites a network of 60 to 70 non-profit organisations with over 150 points of sale, while Italian Wikipedia reports 130 member legal entities and 350 points of sale. The association remains active, promoting campaigns such as FAIR – Trade, future, climate and organising cultural and training events.
History
Associazione Botteghe del Mondo (Assobotteghe) was founded in 1991 as a coordinating body for the Italian fair trade movement, which had been growing since the 1980s through the opening of Botteghe del Mondo shops. The association was established to give a unified voice to these shops and to promote fair trade principles in Italy and internationally. Its statutory aims, as later codified in the statute approved by the members' assembly on 23 September 2006, include coordinating existing cooperatives, shops and associations engaged in fair trade, encouraging the birth of new ones, and raising civil awareness about development issues and unjust trade relations between the Global North and South. The statute also provides for the granting of a guarantee trademark to shops, recognition and support for their autonomous projects, and obtaining institutional recognition at local, national, European and international levels. In 1994 Assobotteghe organised the first edition of Tuttaunaltracosa, the national fair trade festival, which has since become a travelling three-day event across Italy; the association holds the festival's trademark. Assobotteghe is a founding member of NEWS!, the European network of fair trade shops, through which it develops links and exchanges with other European Botteghe associations. Over the decades, the association has engaged in advocacy, cultural events and training, and has run campaigns such as FAIR – Trade, future, climate aimed at European elections. Membership has fluctuated: the official website describes a network of 60 to 70 non-profit organisations with over 150 points of sale, while Italian Wikipedia reports 130 member legal entities and 350 points of sale. The association remains active, based in Reggio Emilia, and continues to organise events and campaigns.
