History
The Association of Charities of Ukraine was founded in April 2011 as a corporate association of charitable organizations. It was established by the founders of the "Philanthropist of the Year" (Благодійник року) competition, including Oleksandr Maksymchuk and Oleksandr Oliinyk. From its inception, the Association aimed to develop effective socially-oriented charity in Ukraine, increase trust and responsibility in charitable activities, and promote professionalism and sustainability in philanthropy. In its early years, the Association focused on improving communication between donors and recipients, helping to implement systemic charity professionally, transparently and with quality, informing society and popularizing charity, and initiating improvements to legislative, financial, economic and social conditions for charitable work. It also prioritized institutional development. A key early initiative was the annual expert survey "State of Charity Development in Ukraine", which the Association has conducted since 2011. This survey forms the basis of the Green Book of Ukrainian Charity (Зелена книга української доброчинності), a document compiled by the Association in partnership with the non-governmental analytical center "BlahoUkraina" (a separate division of the Association). The Green Book consists of two parts: the results of the expert survey and monitoring of public promotion of charity in the country. It aims to launch public consultations on ways to develop charity in Ukraine. The Association also organizes the National Competition "Charitable Ukraine" (Національний конкурс «Благодійна Україна»), which includes regional competitions such as "Charitable Poltava", "Charitable Lviv Region" and others. It holds the National Congress "Charitable Ukraine", a platform for systematic public dialogue on charity development, discussing issues such as taxation of charitable activities, endowments, percentage philanthropy, fundraising technologies, and cooperation between charities and media. Over time, the Association expanded its presence beyond Kyiv. It established regional representations in Lviv, Ukraine, as well as in Brooklyn, United States, and Warsaw, Poland, operating as separate non-profit structures under the name Ukraine Assistance Fund (Фонд Допомоги Україні). The Association has become one of the leading expert platforms in the field of charity development in Ukraine, uniting charitable foundations, public organizations, experts and partners. Its members include major Ukrainian charitable foundations such as the International Charitable Foundation "Ukraine 3000", the International Charitable Foundation "Health of the Ukrainian People", the International Charitable Foundation of Oleksandr Feldman, the Charitable Foundation "Happy Paw", and many others, as well as individual members. The Association is governed by a president, currently Oleksandr Maksymchuk, and a supervisory board that includes figures such as Maryna Krysa (Head of the Supervisory Board), Serhiy Fomenko, Anzhelika Rudnytska, Olha Viieru, Vasyl Poluiko, and Halyna Symkha. The board also includes Andriy Ionov. The organization continues to actively promote charity in Ukraine through its projects, competitions, and public events.
