Overview
The Association nationale des docteurs (ANDès) is a French non-profit association founded in 1970 by Ivan Peychès at the initiative of Pierre Aigrain. It brings together holders of the doctorate — the diploma, grade and title — from all disciplines, regardless of age, professional status, or whether they live in France or abroad. Its stated missions are to promote the doctorate, put the talents of doctors at the service of society, and develop a unifying network of doctors. ANDès is governed by the French law of 1 July 1901 on associations and has been recognised as being of public utility (reconnue d'utilité publique) since 1975. Through its many actions and its involvement in consultation with all organisations and personalities interested in the doctorate and the career progression of doctors, ANDès presents itself as a major actor and partner in the French higher education and research landscape. It runs a network of doctorate holders, the Communauté française des docteurs (CFD), which it created in 2008. Its achievements include publishing numerous surveys and studies; producing the "Doctorat à la loupe" fact sheets documenting good practices around the doctorate within the Guide du doctorat, co-published with the Confédération des Jeunes Chercheurs and supported by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research; promoting and gaining recognition of the doctorate in the private sector, notably its entry into the Répertoire national des certifications professionnelles (RNCP); recognition of the doctorate in the public service outside the academic sector; and work on the doctorate internationally. It co-organised the Workshops on doctoral supervision (WED) in 2016, 2018 and 2023, and co-organised a national colloquium with candidates in the 2012 presidential election on the theme "Young researchers: a major asset facing tomorrow's challenges" in Paris. It organised the Journées de la Communauté française des docteurs (JCFD) in 2013 (Paris), 2015 (Marseille) and 2018 (Toulouse), animated the network of doctors in companies until 2008, ran the "matinées de l'ANDès" conferences two to four times a year from 2002 to 2010, and published the Guide des financements de la recherche, referenced by the research ministry itself. Personalities linked to ANDès include Pierre Aigrain (1924–2002), physicist and politician, founder of ANDès; Hubert Curien (1924–2005), physicist and politician; Guy Ourisson (1926–2006), former president of the Académie des sciences and president of ANDès; Ivan Peychès (1906–1978), founder of ANDès and member of the Académie des sciences; and Jacques Valade (1930–2023), politician.
History
The Association nationale des docteurs (ANDès) was founded in 1970 by Ivan Peychès at the initiative of Pierre Aigrain. It was established as a non-profit association under the French law of 1 July 1901 and was recognised as being of public utility in 1975. From its origins it set out to gather holders of the doctorate — the diploma, grade and title — from all disciplines, regardless of age, professional status, or country of residence. Over the decades ANDès built a programme of activities around three main missions: promoting the doctorate, putting the talents of doctors at the service of society, and developing a unifying network of doctors. Among its recurring activities were the "matinées de l'ANDès", conferences on science and research, higher education and the place of doctors in society, held two to four times a year from 2002 to 2010 and open to all. It also animated a network of doctors in companies until 2008. In 2008 ANDès created the Communauté française des docteurs (CFD), a network bringing together doctorate holders, which it continues to run. It organised the Journées de la Communauté française des docteurs (JCFD) in 2013 in Paris, 2015 in Marseille and 2018 in Toulouse. It co-organised the Workshops on doctoral supervision (WED) in 2016, 2018 and 2023, and co-organised a national colloquium with candidates in the 2012 presidential election on the theme "Young researchers: a major asset facing tomorrow's challenges" in Paris. ANDès has published numerous surveys and studies. Its "Doctorat à la loupe" fact sheets document good practices around the doctorate within the Guide du doctorat, co-published with the Confédération des Jeunes Chercheurs and supported by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research. It also published the Guide des financements de la recherche, referenced by the research ministry itself, which listed many funding offers for doctoral research or post-doctoral research projects under contract. The association has worked to promote and gain recognition of the doctorate in the private sector, notably its entry into the Répertoire national des certifications professionnelles (RNCP), and for recognition of the doctorate in the public service outside the academic sector, as well as on the international dimension of the doctorate. Through these actions and its involvement in consultation with organisations and personalities interested in the doctorate and the career progression of doctors, ANDès presents itself as a major actor and partner in the French higher education and research landscape. Personalities linked to the association include Pierre Aigrain, Hubert Curien, Guy Ourisson, Ivan Peychès and Jacques Valade.
