Overview

The Association française des cinémas d'art et d'essai (AFCAE) is a French non-profit organization founded in 1955 by cinema directors and film critics to promote art and essay cinema. It was officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture in 1959 under André Malraux and Jean Lescure. The AFCAE brings together independent and singular cinemas, aiming to defend pluralism in film exhibition, promote independent cinema, support quality works, and foster audience education, particularly among young people. It currently has 1,170 member cinemas with over 2,000 screens, representing nearly 40% of the French cinema network. The association is governed by a 21-member board of directors and is a founding member of the Confédération internationale des cinémas d'art et d'essai (CICAE). It organizes various events, including the Rencontres Nationales Art et Essai, the Prix des Cinémas Art et Essai, and partnerships such as the Festival Cinéma Télérama/AFCAE. Its website serves as a hub for resources, film recommendations, and professional meetings.

History

The Association française des cinémas d'art et d'essai (AFCAE) was founded in 1955 by five Parisian cinema directors and film critics, following an invitation to the Wiesbaden congress of the young German art cinema guild, where the idea of creating the Confédération internationale des cinémas d'art et d'essai (CICAE) was also conceived. The AFCAE's statutes were adopted in December 1955, with five initial member cinemas: Studio des Ursulines, Studio des Agriculteurs, Studio Parnasse, Cardinet, and Studio de l'Étoile. They were soon joined by Studio 28, La Pagode, Cinéma du Panthéon, Ranelagh, Studio Bertrand, Les Reflets, and suburban cinemas like l'Alcazar d'Asnières and la Tannerie in Versailles. Regional cinemas in Aix-en-Provence, Besançon, Bordeaux, Caen, Grenoble, Marseille, Montpellier, Nantes, Strasbourg, and Toulouse gradually joined. The association was officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture in 1959 under André Malraux and Jean Lescure, and art-house cinemas began receiving specific state aid based on innovative and quality programming. The AFCAE is a founding member of the CICAE and continues to promote art and essay cinema through various initiatives, including film recommendations, professional meetings, and audience education programs.
