Association des journalistes indépendants du Québec

The Association des journalistes indépendants du Québec (AJIQ) is a Quebec organization founded in Montreal in 1988. It defends the independence of journalists against economic and political pressures on the profession and contributes to renewing perspectives on independent journalism and to the evolution of contemporary journalistic practices. Its mission is to improve working conditions, foster professional development, and highlight the contribution of independent journalists to quality, public-interest information. It recognizes as an independent journalist anyone who regularly, occasionally, or voluntarily performs journalistic work for press enterprises or comparable enterprises in Quebec or elsewhere, without permanent employment ties to that enterprise. It also organizes the Grands Prix du Journalisme Indépendant (GPJI), which since 2009 celebrate the quality of independent journalism produced in Quebec.

The Association des journalistes indépendants du Québec (AJIQ) was founded in Montreal in 1988. Since 2009, its Grands Prix du Journalisme Indépendant (GPJI) have celebrated the quality of independent journalism produced in Quebec across written press, radio, television, press photography, and editorial illustration.

Defends the independence of journalists against economic and political pressures and promotes quality, public-interest independent journalism.
