Overview
Associated Universities, Inc. (AUI) is a non-profit organization created in the public interest to establish and manage one of the first Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs), Brookhaven National Laboratory. AUI pioneered the user facility model and has been the trusted manager of U.S. radio astronomy assets for over 70 years. It leads an international coalition to develop, build and operate the ALMA Observatory and is expanding its focus to address national challenges such as cybersecurity through its incubator AUI Labs.
History
AUI was chartered in 1946 to acquire, plan, construct and operate laboratories and other facilities that would unite resources. In 1950, Brookhaven National Laboratory opened. In 1956, Brookhaven researchers discovered a new way to study DNA and produce a photographic image of DNA synthesis in plant roots, and AUI began managing the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and Green Bank Observatory for the National Science Foundation. AUI proposed the creation of ALMA and led efforts in its design, construction, management and operation. ALMA began early science operations in September 2011.
