Overview
Associació Llengua Nacional (National Language Association) is a Catalan cultural association founded on 14 June 1991 by a group of individuals including Maria Lluïsa Pazos, Josep Ferrer i Ferrer, Jordi Solé i Camardons, Jordi M. Colomer, Àngel Grau, Antoni Adell, and honorary members Avel·lí Artís-Gener and Alfred Badia i Gabarró. Its primary objective is to foster and study the Catalan language, defend its unity and dialectal richness, promote a rich and genuine use of the language, and work for it to become the habitual means of communication in the Catalan Countries. The association is best known for publishing the magazine Llengua Nacional, a reference in linguistics and sociolinguistics. It also organizes debates within the "Parlem-ne" cycle, which generate considerable interest. The magazine, initially a small bulletin, became a quarterly publication from 1998 under the direction of Ramon Sangles i Molas, who took Albert Jané i Riera and Josep Ruaix i Vinyet as linguistic references. The magazine typically includes an editorial, sections on sociolinguistics, orthography, syntax, and lexicon, as well as an interview and reviews of language-related works. Over the years, the association has been led by several presidents: Maria Lluïsa Pazos (founding president), Ramon Sangles i Molas (from 1998 to 2016), Mercè Espuny (from January 2016), and Abel Carretero (from June 2017). Under Carretero's leadership, new activities and proposals were created, notably the Premi Llengua Nacional in 2018, a continuation of the earlier Premi Ramon Aramon i Serra for linguistic loyalty. The association continues to be active, with recent initiatives such as podcasts on Catalan in social media and the IX Premi Llengua Nacional. The association's work is supported by numerous collaborators, including renowned figures, university professors, members of institutions, and recognized scholars such as Albert Jané, Josep Ruaix, Carles Riera, Jaume Salvanyà, Bernat Joan, Gabriel Bibiloni, Andreu Salom, Eugeni S. Reig, Anna Porquet, Ramon Monton, Roser Latorre, Marcel Fité, Carles Domingo, Jaume Vallcorba, Josep Espunyes, and Carme Forcadell, among many others.
History
Associació Llengua Nacional was founded on 14 June 1991 by a group of people including Maria Lluïsa Pazos, who became president; Josep Ferrer i Ferrer, Jordi Solé i Camardons, and Jordi M. Colomer, who became vice presidents; Àngel Grau, secretary; Antoni Adell, treasurer; and two honorary members: Avel·lí Artís-Gener and Alfred Badia i Gabarró. The association was founded with the intention of disseminating a non-alienated linguistic consciousness and creating a movement of denunciation, resistance, and recovery of the social use of the language. A small bulletin began to be published to support the association's action, and in the same year 1991 the first issue of what would become the association's future magazine was published. From 1998, the direction passed to Ramon Sangles i Molas, who took as linguistic references two pillars: Albert Jané i Riera and Josep Ruaix i Vinyet. From that moment the movement was expressed almost exclusively in the form of the magazine, which became a quarterly publication. The magazine's composition, headed by the editorial, contains sections on sociolinguistics, as well as orthography, syntax, and lexicon. It also usually has a section with an interview and reviews of language works. During 2012, Llengua Nacional disseminated a manifesto defending Catalan as the only official language of the future Catalan state, against other opinions seeking the co-official status of Catalan and Spanish. In January 2016, Mercè Espuny took over the presidency, replacing Ramon Sangles after nineteen years at the head of the association. Shortly after, in June 2017, she was replaced in the presidency by Abel Carretero, who together with the new Board of Government (including, for example, Albert Jané) created and disseminated new activities and proposals to continue growing the association. Notable in this regard is the creation, in 2018, of the Premi Llengua Nacional, a kind of continuation of the initial Premi Ramon Aramon i Serra for linguistic loyalty. Thanks to the good reception it had in its first edition, it continues today. Among the magazine's collaborators are renowned figures, university professors, members of institutions, and recognized scholars. Thus, there are names such as Albert Jané, Josep Ruaix, Carles Riera, Jaume Salvanyà, Bernat Joan, Gabriel Bibiloni, Andreu Salom, Eugeni S. Reig, Anna Porquet, Ramon Monton, Roser Latorre, Marcel Fité, Carles Domingo, Jaume Vallcorba, Josep Espunyes, and Carme Forcadell, among many others.
