Overview
Las Kellys is an association of hotel room attendants in Spain. Its official website describes actions by Kellys groups in Barcelona, Benidorm, Fuerteventura and Catalonia, including a meeting with Members of the European Parliament and the European Commission alongside unionists from the United Kingdom (United Voices of the World) and France (CNT Marseille). The association has publicly demanded real measures against work overload, citing an Invassat study of nearly 200 hotels in the Valencian Community that reported a high share of workers suffering pathologies or discomfort attributed to workload. It has also criticized the externalization of hotel housekeeping departments, which it says reduces room attendants' pay by almost 30% compared with hospitality-sector collective agreements.
History
Las Kellys is an association of hotel room attendants in Spain. According to its official website, on 6 November 2019 Kellys Barcelona, the Las Kellys Catalonia union (which presented the proposal), Kellys Benidorm and Kellys Fuerteventura, together with two unionists from the United Kingdom (United Voices of the World) and two from France (CNT Marseille), met with Members of the European Parliament and the European Commission. The site also records that on 1 May 2019 Las Kellys Benidorm again called a Workers' Day demonstration together with other social platforms including La Marea Pensionista Marina Baixa, PAH Altea, Mujeres con Voz, CGT and Plataforma Feminista Marina Baixa, under the slogan 'Contra la precariedad La Lucha es el único camino'. It further describes an indefinite protest by Las Kellys Barcelona every Friday from 17:30 to 20:00 in front of the Grand Hotel Central (Via Laietana 30) against dismissals for unionization. In July 2018, Kellys from Benidorm and Alicante joined forces to demand real solutions to the workload they said was making them ill inside hotels, citing an Invassat study of nearly 200 hotels in the Valencian Community. In July 2016 the association published an opinion letter from a room attendant in Benidorm criticizing the TVE1 programme 'Trabajo Temporal' for its treatment of housekeeping work, and noting that hotels externalize housekeeping departments, which she said means room attendants earn almost 30% less than under hospitality collective agreements.
