Overview

The Associació de Publicacions Periòdiques en Català (APPEC) is a non-profit association that groups publishers of general-interest and specialised magazines in Catalan with distribution and reach across the Catalan-speaking territories. It was founded in 1983 on the initiative of about fifteen magazines, driven by Ferran Mascarell. By 2021 it brought together more than 231 associated magazines and digital media written in Catalan, spanning a wide range of periodicities and topics. The association's mission is to promote, protect and project Catalan-language magazines and digital media. It cultivates an editorial ecosystem that speaks Catalan, encourages reading and opens new paths through collaboration and commitment. Its portal, lesrevistes.cat, presents member titles and offers access to La Revisteca, a reading library for magazines. APPEC also runs iQUIOSC.cat, described as the only press and newspaper platform in Catalan, which aggregates more than 160 publications readable on the web and via iOS and Android apps; during the 2020 lockdown it offered one month of free access to magazines through a flat-rate subscription. APPEC organises the annual Nit de les Revistes i la Premsa en Català, the sector's awards ceremony, jointly with the Associació Catalana de Premsa Comarcal (ACPC) and, since 2021, the Associació Catalana d'Editors de Diaris (ACED). Awards recognise Best Publication, Best Report and Best Editorial Design across magazine, press and digital categories, as well as APPEC board prizes for Communication, Culture and Society. The association has also launched campaigns such as 'Sigues lliure, llegeix' to combat information manipulation and fake news through reading Catalan magazines and digital media, and 'iQUIOSC.cat en ruta', a magazine caravan that travels the country to bring publications to small towns lacking sales outlets. It has promoted initiatives such as 'T'agradarà llegir en català' to encourage reading by distributing publications in waiting rooms. Since 2016 its president has been Germà Capdevila, editor of Revista Esguard. APPEC has received significant recognitions including the Premi Nacional de Comunicació, the Creu de Sant Jordi and the Premi Nacional Joan Coromines awarded by the Coordinadora d'Associacions per la Llengua Catalana. Member titles include Cuina, Descobrir, El Petit Sàpiens, El Temps, Enderrock, L'Avenç, Sàpiens, Serra d'Or, Time Out, Cavall Fort and El Tatano, among others.

History

The Associació de Publicacions Periòdiques en Català (APPEC) was born in 1983 from the initiative of about fifteen magazines, driven by Ferran Mascarell. It was created as a non-profit entity to group publishers of general-interest and specialised magazines in Catalan that have distribution and dissemination within the Catalan-speaking sphere. Over the following decades it grew into the main representative body for Catalan-language periodicals. By 2021 it agglutinated more than 231 associated magazines and digital media written in Catalan, with different periodicities and themes. Since 2016 its president has been Germà Capdevila, editor of Revista Esguard. The association has received important recognitions such as the Premi Nacional de Comunicació, the Creu de Sant Jordi and the Premi Nacional Joan Coromines awarded by the Coordinadora d'Associacions per la Llengua Catalana. In recent years APPEC has launched campaigns such as 'Sigues lliure, llegeix' to combat information manipulation and fake news through reading Catalan magazines and digital media, and 'iQUIOSC.cat en ruta', a magazine caravan that travels the country to bring publications to small towns where they do not arrive due to a lack of sales outlets. It has promoted initiatives such as 'T'agradarà llegir en català' to encourage reading by distributing publications in waiting rooms. It also organises the Nit de les Revistes i la Premsa en Català, which for more than 20 years has recognised the work of communication professionals and publications in the country. The Nit is organised by APPEC together with the Associació Catalana de Premsa Comarcal (ACPC) and, since 2021, the Associació Catalana d'Editors de Diaris (ACED) has joined. Among other awards, it recognises Best Publication, Best Report and Best Editorial Design in Magazine, Press and Digital. It also awards the APPEC Board prizes for Communication, Culture and Society. APPEC also operates iQUIOSC.cat, described as the only press and newspaper platform in Catalan. The digital newsstand brings together more than 160 publications that can be read from the iQUIOSC.cat website or from tablet and mobile with iOS and Android applications. In 2020, during the lockdown, it offered 1 month of free access to magazines through a flat-rate subscription.
