Overview

The Associació de Mitjans d’Informació i Comunicació (AMIC) is a Catalan media association founded in 1997 under the name Associació Catalana de Premsa Gratuïta i Mitjans Digitals (ACPG). It represents print, digital and audiovisual media outlets operating in Catalan-speaking territories: Catalonia, the Valencian Country, the Balearic Islands, Andorra and Northern Catalonia. According to its own description, AMIC is an innovative association with more than 25 years of history serving local, thematic and general-interest media. The association brings together a large network of publications. As of the period described in its Wikipedia entry, it integrates 600 media outlets, including 141 free-press titles with a combined print run of over 1.3 million copies, 75 paid-press titles with a distribution exceeding 96,000 copies, 356 digital media reaching more than 13 million unique monthly users, and 15 audiovisual media (radio and television). Since 2023 it has also incorporated Catalan-language content creators. AMIC’s origins lie in the free-press sector. It was created in 1997 to group free-distribution periodicals in Catalonia and Andorra, written in any language, covering general and specialised information but excluding purely commercial content. In 2008 digital media were incorporated, and in May 2014 the organisation changed its name to the current one, reflecting that free distribution was no longer its exclusive defining feature. In June 2014 it federated with the Associació de Publicacions Periòdiques en Català (APPEC) and the Associació Catalana de la Premsa Comarcal (ACPC), forming the Federació d’Associacions d’Editors de Premsa, Revistes i Mitjans Digitals. Territorial expansion during the 2000s changed the association’s character. The incorporation of media from the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Country allowed it to build a broader network of local media linked to the Catalan-language communication space. In 2009 ACPG Illes Balears was constituted, later renamed AMIC - Illes Balears de Mitjans d’Informació i Comunicació from 2014. By 2015 the association had more than 240 associated media, roughly half free-press titles with a combined print run of over 2.5 million copies and half digital media with more than 2.5 million unique monthly users. AMIC also organises awards and initiatives such as the Premi Internacional AMIC, Premis CRIT, Del Poble al Món, AMIC-Ficcions, AMIC-Directes, AMIC-Nous Talents, Escat Mèdia and Piren’IA Media. In 2024 it received the Premi Pompeu Fabra in the communication and new technologies category from the Generalitat de Catalunya, recognising its contribution to the social projection of the Catalan language. The award was presented on 12 December 2024 at the Palau de la Generalitat.

History

The Associació de Mitjans d’Informació i Comunicació (AMIC) was constituted in 1997 under the name Associació Catalana de Premsa Gratuïta i Mitjans Digitals (ACPG). Its founding purpose was to bring together free-distribution periodicals from Catalonia and Andorra, written in any language, covering both general and specialised information, but excluding publications with purely commercial content. At the “II Jornades Internacionals de Premsa Gratuïta” in 2006, organised by the Associació Catalana de la Premsa Gratuïta i Mitjans Digitals, it was reported that the 85 local titles distributed almost three million copies. The Dutch expert Piet Bakker stated that this informative county press made “Catalonia a unique case in Europe”. Subsequently, in 2008, digital media providing general, thematic or territorial journalistic information were also incorporated. In 2009, ACPG Illes Balears de Premsa Gratuïta i Mitjans Digitals was constituted, which from 2014 was renamed AMIC - Illes Balears de Mitjans d’Informació i Comunicació. In May 2014 the organisation changed its name to the current Associació de Mitjans d’Informació i Comunicació, considering that free distribution was no longer an exclusive trait of the association. In June of that same year it federated with the Associació de Publicacions Periòdiques en Català (APPEC) and the Associació Catalana de la Premsa Comarcal (ACPC), and together they constituted the Federació d’Associacions d’Editors de Premsa, Revistes i Mitjans Digitals. By 2015 the association had more than 240 associated media, approximately half of which were free-press titles with a combined print run of over two and a half million copies, and the other half digital media that together exceeded two and a half million unique monthly users. Territorial expansion initiated during the 2000s modified the character of the association. The incorporation of media from the Balearic Islands and the Valencian Country allowed the creation of a broader network of local media linked to the Catalan-language communication space. Since 2023 it has also incorporated Catalan-language content creators. As of the period described in its Wikipedia entry, AMIC integrates 600 media outlets: 141 free-press titles with a combined print run of over 1.3 million copies, 75 paid-press titles with a distribution exceeding 96,000 copies, 356 digital media that together exceed 13 million unique monthly users, and 15 audiovisual media including radio and television. Among the associated media are print, digital and audiovisual outlets in Catalonia, the Valencian Country, the Balearic Islands, Andorra and Northern Catalonia. In 2024, AMIC received the Premi Pompeu Fabra in the communication and new technologies category, awarded by the Generalitat de Catalunya. The award recognises people, entities, companies and organisations that contribute to the social projection of the Catalan language. The jury highlighted AMIC as a key actor in the communication landscape for its work in fostering innovation, creativity and professional quality. The prize was presented on 12 December 2024 at the Palau de la Generalitat.
