Overview

The Associació de Dones Periodistes de Catalunya (ADPC), or Association of Women Journalists of Catalonia, is a Catalan-scope professional association of women journalists in Spain. It brings together women working in the media and works for the recognition of professional equality for women journalists. It was the first association of women journalists created in Spain, approving its statutes in June 1992, and it was created within the Col·legi de Periodistes de Catalunya (College of Journalists of Catalonia). Among its stated objectives are improving the professional situation of women journalists; organizing meetings and activities aimed at knowledge and defense of their professional rights; disseminating facts and events affecting women in the field of social communication in order to coordinate responses; creating links with other associations and entities with similar aims at state and international level; disseminating the conclusions of its meetings to institutions with specific responsibility and to public opinion; publishing a bulletin and/or magazine to report on the association's activities and other topics concerning women and the media; and encouraging women journalists to seek positions of responsibility. The ADPC has been led by a series of presidents: Montserrat Minobis (1992–2001), Elvira Altés (2001–2003), Montserrat Puig (2003–2010), Carme Freixa (2010–2012), Carolina Barber (2012–2016), Mavi Carrasco (2016–2019), and Marta Corcoy (2019–present). In publishing, from 2001 to 2009 the ADPC published the magazine "Dones" in Catalan, directed by journalist Elvira Altés, featuring interviews and reports on different aspects of journalism with a gender perspective. Since 2010 it has maintained the digital publication "Dossier Dones," issued twice a year. Internationally, the ADPC is linked to the European Network of Women Journalists, in whose founding it collaborated and of which it has been a member since 1993. It maintains contacts with other networks of journalists in Europe and with associations of women journalists in France, Germany, England, and Italy. Since 2005 it has been a founding member of the International Network of Women Journalists and Communicators. The association is also known for its awards. Since 1993 it has presented the Non-Sexist Communication Awards (Premios de Comunicación no Sexista). Since 2015 it has awarded the Margarita Rivière Prize for journalistic rigor with a gender vision, in memory of the Barcelona journalist Margarita Rivière Martí (Barcelona, 1944–2015). The prize aims to recognize excellence in journalism by a journalist who has stood out for rigor, independence, and a gender perspective. In the first edition in 2015 the prize went to journalist Milagros Pérez Oliva; in 2016 the recipient was Soledad Gallego Díaz.
