Overview

The Associació Catalana de Ciències de l'Alimentació (ACCA) is a multidisciplinary scientific association based in Catalonia, Spain, dedicated to the study, development, dissemination and exchange of knowledge in food science. Founded in 1979 on the initiative of Dr. Maria del Carmen de la Torre Boronat, professor of Bromatology and Toxicology at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Barcelona, it brings together individuals and legal entities interested in food science, nutrition, food safety and related disciplines. Its members come from academia, research, industry, public administration, private and public laboratories, and healthcare centres. Since 1992 the ACCA has been a subsidiary society (societat filial) of the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC), the Catalan academy of sciences and humanities, initially attached to the Section of Sciences and Technology and, from 25 February 2013, to the Section of Biological Sciences. The association operates across the Catalan-speaking territories and uses Catalan as its own working language. It is a non-profit entity. The ACCA publishes the semi-annual journal TECA (Tecnologia i Ciència dels Aliments) and, since 2004, the Butlletí de l'ACCA. It organises conferences, technical seminars and congresses in collaboration with research groups and other entities, and supports students' professional development by connecting them with food-sector experts. It is a member of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) since 1987 and of the Unión de Ciencia y Tecnología de los Alimentos de España (UCTAE). In recent years the ACCA has addressed topical issues such as food loss and waste prevention, allergen and gluten management, digitalisation and artificial intelligence in the food chain, and Catalan culinary heritage. In 2026 it organised, with the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the 1st Congress on the Prevention of Food Loss and Waste, held at the IEC's Sala Prat de la Riba.

History

The Associació Catalana de Ciències de l'Alimentació (ACCA) was created in 1979 on the initiative of Dr. Maria del Carmen de la Torre Boronat, professor of Bromatology and Toxicology at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Barcelona. She was joined by other professionals from industry and food science, including Ramon Clotet, Agustí Contijoch i Mestres, Roberto Xalabarder Coca and the jurist Lluís Gonzalez Vaquer, who drafted the statutes and signed the founding act. During its early years the association's headquarters was the Chair of Bromatology. In 1987 the ACCA became a member of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) and of the Unión de Ciencia y Tecnología de los Alimentos de España (UCTAE). In 1989 the secretariat moved to the offices of PIMEC in order to organise its administration and serve its nearly 250 members; this change allowed the association to begin the procedures to join the Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC). In 1992 the ACCA was admitted to the IEC as a subsidiary society (societat filial), attached to the Section of Sciences and Technology, and its statutes were modified accordingly. From 25 February 2013 it has been attached to the Section of Biological Sciences. The association publishes the semi-annual journal TECA (Tecnologia i Ciència dels Aliments) and, since 2004, the Butlletí de l'ACCA. In the 2020s the ACCA has continued to organise technical conferences and congresses on topics such as food loss and waste prevention, allergen and gluten management, digitalisation and artificial intelligence in the food chain, and Catalan culinary heritage. In 2026 it held, with the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food of the Generalitat de Catalunya, the 1st Congress on the Prevention of Food Loss and Waste at the IEC's Sala Prat de la Riba.
