History

Aspen Institute Central Europe was established in 2012 as a public benefit company, serving as the Central European branch of the Aspen Institute global network. The parent Aspen Institute was founded in 1950 in the United States by Chicago businessman Walter Paepcke as the Aspen Institute of Humanistic Studies, inspired by the natural beauty of Aspen, Colorado, and envisioned as a gathering place for thinkers, leaders, artists and musicians. From its founding, Aspen Institute Central Europe has operated primarily in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. It organizes public conferences, seminars, workshops and professional discussions, and runs programs such as the Aspen Young Leaders Program and the Aspen Annual Conference. In 2023, the organization opened a new office in Warsaw, Poland, expanding its physical presence in the region. The Warsaw office is led by Bartlomiej Kot, Head of Warsaw Office, who specializes in Polish foreign policy strategy, transatlantic relations, and the security architecture of Central and Eastern Europe. The institute publishes the Aspen Review, an English-language magazine covering Central and Eastern European affairs. It also hosts the Madeleine Albright Award, an annual honor, and the Aspen Energy Roundtable, often held at the Globsec Forum. Annual reports dating back to 2012 document its projects and financial statements prepared under Czech accounting regulations. As part of the Aspen Global Network, Aspen Institute Central Europe collaborates with independent offices in Colombia, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, New Zealand, Romania, Spain, Ukraine and the United Kingdom. The network focuses on leadership development, informed dialogue about democracy and the rule of law, and a wide array of economic, financial, social and political topics.
