Overview

Asociación Ucraniana Renacimiento (Ukrainian: Українське товариство «Відродження», "Renaissance") is a Ukrainian cultural and educational association based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It traces its origins to the Ukrainian nationalist and military-political organizations founded in the 1930s by the Ukrainian diaspora in Argentina. On 26 April 1931, the founding assembly of the Ukrainian society "Sokil" was held, aiming at physical and military education of its members so that they could return to Ukraine and fight for its independence. On 23 November 1933, the founding assembly of the Ukrainian nationalist organization of military-political character called "Ukrainian Rifle Community" (Українська стрілецька громада) took place. Among the founders were many people who for long years belonged to the leadership of this society, including Mykhailo Pryimak, Petro Malets, Ivan Kryvyi, Teodor Khomyshyn, Ivan Hryhorashchuk, Teodor Danyliuk, and Petro Hrabynskyi. In 1938, the similar "Rifle Community" and "Sokil" merged into the "Organization for the State Renaissance of Ukraine". Due to constant denunciations by ill-wishers, this organization suffered from police searches, interrogations, and arrests of leading activists, so within a year the society changed its name to the Ukrainian Society "Vidrodzhennia" and acquired a cultural-educational character. The society stood on the positions of the OUN of Colonel Andriy Melnyk. Even before the merger, "USG" and "Sokil" had their branches, which became branches of "Vidrodzhennia", including one founded in 1933 in Berisso and one founded in 1936 in Avellaneda. The branch of "Sokil" in Córdoba did not recognize the merger and continued to operate as an independent organization. In total, the "Vidrodzhennia" society had 9 branches, two of which had their own buildings. From the 1950s to 1985, a credit cooperative operated under the society. The society's organ was the weekly "Nash Klych", which in recent years has not been published due to financial problems. In addition, the society published its own calendars. Among the members of the society was Antin Postolovskyi. Today "Vidrodzhennia" is one of the main collective members of the Ukrainian Central Representation in Argentina. The chairman is Ivan Rehei. It has a central office in Buenos Aires and three branches in Buenos Aires Province in the cities of Berisso, Avellaneda, and Munro. The society operates the "Kalyna" recreation center, the "Dunai" ballet, and the Ukrainian dance ensemble "Zhuravli".
