Overview

The Asociación Socio-Educativa Antonio Gandoy is a non-profit socio-educational entity based in Galicia, Spain. It was constituted in 2013 by a group of workers linked to the earlier programme Preescolar na Casa, after the programme's main supporting institution, the Xunta de Galicia, cancelled its funding. The association was named after Antonio Gandoy, who had founded Preescolar na Casa in 1977, and it set out to continue attending to the needs of rural families raising children in the years before compulsory schooling. The association's mission is to promote an education that enables people to understand reality, intervene in it, and live in harmony with themselves, with others, and with nature. It gives particular relevance to the family in the first years of life and assumes a commitment to the language, culture, surroundings, and knowledge of young children as references for personality development, especially from ages 0 to 3. Its activities include organising and inventorying the material produced by Preescolar na Casa so that it can be made available to people interested in knowing, studying, or using it; designing programmes and resources for educational intervention aimed at positive parenting; and developing activities for families and society to improve the education of young children. Among its flagship programmes are the Espazos das Familias (Family Spaces), weekly seminars offering training for mothers and fathers with children aged 0 to 3 to strengthen parenting competences; O son que me arrola (The Sound That Lulls Me), a musical proposal bringing traditional Galician oral culture through lullabies, rhymes, and music to families with children aged 0 to 6; and the Festa xogueteira, family play days for parents with children aged 0 to 3 through structured learning in spaces for construction, motor skills, music, art, coordination, and manipulation. The association carries out its activities thanks to contributions and collaboration from various entities and individuals. People can contribute as full members, protecting members, and volunteers. Among collaborating institutions are provincial councils (deputacións), municipalities, associations, libraries, foundations, and rural development centres. Its objectives maintain basically the working line of Preescolar na Casa, and include promoting a culture of childhood, fostering preventive and formative activities for positive parenting, managing knowledge about childhood and family, promoting socio-educational care services for children and/or families in rural areas, dispersed populations, and especially vulnerable family environments, and fostering the study, conservation, and dissemination of traditional Galician culture and the use and promotion of the Galician language.
