The Asociación Española de Banca (AEB), commonly known in English as the Spanish Banking Association, is a professional and representative organization for Spanish and foreign banks conducting business in Spain. It was established in 1977 under the legal framework governing the right of trade-union association and has its own legal personality and assets, separate from those of its member institutions. Membership is formally voluntary, but the association includes virtually all banks with substantial activity in the Spanish market. The AEB acts as a collective voice for the banking sector in dealings with public authorities, political parties, parliamentary groups, trade unions, business organizations, social organizations and the media. Its work includes communicating regulatory and administrative information to member banks, contributing to sector-wide dialogue, studying legal and policy issues of common interest, and supporting coordinated responses to changes in the financial environment. It also participates in collective bargaining affecting the banking sector and promotes forms of self-regulation where common European or national principles are applicable. A major part of the association's role is analytical and informational. It publishes periodic information on banks' balance sheets, income statements and consolidated financial statements, and prepares statistics, reports and assessments concerning the condition and evolution of banking activity in Spain. It also produces analyses of the economic outlook and financial markets and informs members about legislative, regulatory and other initiatives that could affect their operations. Since 1994, the AEB has also performed functions previously associated with the defunct Superior Banking Council. At the European level, it represents Spanish banks in the European Banking Federation and, through that channel, participates in the wider International Banking Federation. Its representatives take part in the governing bodies, committees and working groups of those organizations. The AEB also collaborates as an adherent entity with the Spanish Mortgage Association. Through the AEB Foundation, the association sponsors CUNEF Universidad, supporting academic education and professional development in banking and finance. The organization is led by a president elected within its governance structure. Alejandra Kindelán Oteyza became president on 5 April 2022, succeeding José María Roldán Alegre. The AEB is an industry association rather than a retail bank: it does not primarily market deposit, lending or payment products to consumers, but provides representation, information, research, coordination and sector services to its members.

It distributes official communications and regulatory information to members, including information concerning recommendations, implementation of rules, requests for cooperation and, where applicable, judicial requirements involving banking operations or the blocking of accounts and deposits. It also studies legal questions of common interest and alerts members to regulatory and legislative initiatives that may influence their activities. The association assumed an expanded institutional role in 1994 when it took on functions formerly performed by the Superior Banking Council, which had ceased to exist. This strengthened the AEB's position as a central professional body for the banking industry in Spain. Its responsibilities include sector research, preparation of statistics and publication of information on banks' balance sheets, income statements and consolidated financial statements. It also produces assessments of economic conditions and financial markets, allowing member institutions and external stakeholders to follow developments in Spanish banking. The AEB participates in labor relations by negotiating the collective bargaining agreement applicable to the banking sector with trade-union representatives. It also facilitates self-regulatory initiatives when banks are expected to adhere to shared principles established at European or, eventually, national level. These activities place the organization between a traditional trade association, a sector information provider and a policy-dialogue institution. The association has maintained an international and European dimension through its representation of Spanish banks in the European Banking Federation. Through the federation, it also participates in the International Banking Federation and contributes to their governing bodies, committees and working groups. It collaborates with the Spanish Mortgage Association as an adherent entity, linking its work with a related sector organization. The AEB's educational role is supported through the AEB Foundation, which sponsors CUNEF Universidad. Through this relationship, the organization contributes to university-level teaching and professional preparation in finance and banking. Its presidential succession has included Rafael Termes from 1977 to 1990, José Luis Leal Maldonado from 1990 to 2006, Miguel Martín Fernández from 2006 to 2014, José María Roldán Alegre from 2014 to 2022, and Alejandra Kindelán Oteyza from 2022 onward. Kindelán took office on 5 April 2022.
