Overview

The Asociación Argentina de Rosicultura (Argentine Rose-Growing Association) is a non-profit Argentine association dedicated to the cultivation and knowledge of roses. It was constituted in 1951 under the English name "The Rose Society of Argentina" by a group of four rose enthusiasts — F. Macadam, O. S. Bush, T. E. B. Poole and C. H. Chevallier Boutell — with the aim of encouraging the cultivation and dissemination of the rose. In 1975, under the presidency of Mrs. Poppy Niven, the organization changed its name to "Asociación Argentina de Rosicultura" and its meetings were henceforth held in Spanish rather than English. It became a national association and an active member of the World Federation of Rose Societies (WFRS). The association promotes the use of roses in parks and gardens, integrating them with other varieties of flowers and plants to incorporate them into the landscape, as well as their use in floral designs. Thanks to a growing membership, it now has branches in Córdoba, Mendoza, San Juan and Mar del Plata, as well as members in various inland localities. It holds monthly meetings on the third Thursday of each month with prominent speakers, and organizes two annual rose exhibitions — in autumn (March or April) and in spring (October). It also runs general courses on roses, sharing the experience acquired over the years and information received from other associations abroad. Buenos Aires is home to a rose garden, "El Rosedal", which is nearly 100 years old, having been created in 1916. In 2014 the president was Bettina Crosta.
