Overview

The Association of Samaritans of the Czech Republic (Czech: Asociace samaritánů České republiky, abbreviated ASČR) is a voluntary civic association of people of goodwill whose stated aim, in the context of the international Samaritan movement, is to help all people regardless of national, racial, religious, political or other affiliation, in the spirit of the democratic and humanitarian traditions on which the Czech Republic was founded. The name derives from Hebrew, from the ethnico-religious group of Samaritans (Samařané) in Israel and the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan; by that parable, "Samaritans" are people who provide help to others in need. The association has set goals that are realized gradually, aware that the current economic situation of the state requires the activity of associations of its type primarily in priority areas, namely healthcare and assistance to socially weak citizens. It currently provides the Central Bohemian Region with a very inexpensive model of non-state emergency medical service comprising four RZP stations and two RLP stations, and within Prague and the Central Bohemian Region a set of social services together with humanitarian aid in cases of disasters. Its main activity is the operation of emergency medical services, organized into two units: the Emergency Medical Service Prague-West and the Emergency Medical Service Kralupy nad Vltavou. The Prague-West service was registered on 1 January 1993 with the Prague-West District Office as a non-state medical facility; since then, under a contract first with the Prague-West District Office, then with the Prague-West District Emergency Operations Centre and now with the Territorial Centre of the Central Bohemian Region Emergency Medical Service based in Kladno, it has fulfilled the tasks of emergency medical service response teams in the Central Bohemian Region. The Kralupy nad Vltavou service currently provides pre-hospital emergency care not only in the Kralupy area but also in adjacent parts of the Kladno and Mělník regions and parts of Prague-West and Prague-East, and also covers the D8 motorway from the border of the capital Prague to the Roudnice nad Labem exit; all its activity is directed and coordinated by the Medical Operations Centre of the Central Bohemian Region Emergency Service Territorial Centre in Kladno, to which emergency line 155 from the areas covered by the Kralupy service is also routed. Beyond emergency services, ASČR operates a permanent medical service at Václav Havel Airport Prague, providing emergency medical service and first-aid medical service standby for the airport, with dispatch instructions issued by the operations centre of the Fire Rescue Service at Václav Havel Airport Prague. It also offers secondary transport of patients requiring urgent care, domestic and foreign repatriations, medical transport service, medical assistance, the "Ambulance of Fulfilled Wishes" (Sanitka splněných přání), a special works detachment, a rescue cynology detachment, an education and training centre, services for the disabled, and meal delivery for seniors. It also runs a job offer section for physicians, paramedics, airport paramedics and drivers, and operates the Secondary Medical School Mělník (SZŠ Mělník), the only medical school in the Mělník area, teaching the Health Assistant 53-41-M/01 field under the "Practical Nurse" school education programme, concluded with the state maturita examination. Its Club of Active Ageing (KLAS ASČR ZBRASLAV) is an association of seniors interested in active life; in September 2008 a Consultation Centre of the Virtual University of the Third Age (VU3V) began its activity there and still operates.
