Overview
Asmodee is a France-founded games publisher and distribution group whose principal business is the development, publication, localization and distribution of tabletop entertainment. Its portfolio spans modern board games, trading and collectible card games, family and party games, strategy titles, role-playing games, licensed properties and digital adaptations. The company was established in 1995 by Marc Nunès with a dual purpose: to create and publish its own games while also helping smaller designers and publishers bring products to market, initially in France. A formative early success was Jungle Speed, whose rights Asmodee acquired in 1998. Through sustained promotion in toy stores and other French retail outlets, the game became a major commercial hit and reportedly sold more than four million copies. Asmodee also obtained the French publishing rights for the Pokémon Trading Card Game in 2003, strengthening its retail reach and distribution capabilities. Around 2007, the company began pursuing a more explicitly European and international strategy. Investment from Montefiore Investment provided capital for expansion and acquisitions, including the 2010 purchase of Esdevium, a major United Kingdom hobby-games distributor. Ownership changed several times as Asmodee expanded. Eurazeo acquired the company in January 2014 for €143 million, after which the business accelerated its program of acquiring publishers, studios, distributors and intellectual-property rights. It combined with Days of Wonder in 2014 and Fantasy Flight Games later that year, adding internationally recognized franchises and publishing expertise. In 2016, Asmodee acquired the English-language rights to Catan from Mayfair Games and created Catan Studio. It also acquired Bergsala Enigma, later returning the business to the Enigma Distribution name and subsequently integrating it as Asmodee Nordic. The group continued to maintain or distribute legacy imprints such as Descartes Editeur and Eurogames, although those names were not used for new original publications in the period described by the reference material. Eurazeo sold Asmodee to PAI Partners in 2018 for approximately €1.2 billion. Under PAI, the group continued broadening its publishing and media activities, including the launch of Aconyte in 2020, a book imprint focused on fiction connected to game worlds and licensed properties. Asmodee also sold The Lagoon Group to University Games in 2020, acquired the online tabletop platform Board Game Arena in 2021, and acquired the online retailer Miniature Market during the same general period. Digital publishing became an important adjacent activity. Asmodee and acquired companies developed digital versions of tabletop properties for computers and mobile devices, including Mysterium and Potion Explosion. The group also formed Fantasy Flight Interactive in 2017 to create digital adaptations of Fantasy Flight properties. That studio closed in January 2020 during company-wide layoffs. Asmodee subsequently emphasized licensing its game library to external developers. Asmodee Digital was renamed Twin Sails Interactive in 2022 and was spun off from the group in 2025 as Asmodee refocused on its core tabletop business. Embracer Group agreed to acquire Asmodee in 2021, completing the transaction on 8 March 2022. In 2024, Embracer announced a planned corporate separation into three publicly traded businesses, with Asmodee Group AB established as the holding company for Asmodee assets. Asmodee announced in February 2025 that it would begin trading on Nasdaq Stockholm, completing its separation from Embracer. The resulting group remains centered on tabletop publishing, global distribution, portfolio management and the exploitation of established game properties across physical and licensed formats.
History
Asmodee was founded in France in 1995 by Marc Nunès. Its original model combined in-house game development with publishing and distribution services for smaller designers and publishers. This approach gave the company a relatively broad product pipeline and helped it establish relationships with specialist and mainstream retailers. The acquisition of Jungle Speed rights in 1998 became an early turning point: strong promotion through French toy stores and other retail channels made the game one of the company’s best-known early successes. In 2003, Asmodee added the French-language publishing rights for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, further extending its consumer reach and distribution network. From approximately 2007, Nunès directed the company toward European and international growth. Montefiore Investment took a 40 percent stake, giving Asmodee additional resources for acquisitions. In 2010, it purchased Esdevium, described in the reference material as the largest hobby-games distributor in the United Kingdom. This acquisition strengthened Asmodee’s access to specialist retail and international distribution. Eurazeo acquired Asmodee in January 2014 for €143 million. The new ownership accelerated consolidation in the tabletop sector. Asmodee agreed to combine with Days of Wonder in August 2014 and later that year merged with Fantasy Flight Games. These transactions brought major game catalogs and established development and publishing teams into the wider group. Asmodee also retained distribution activities associated with the Descartes Editeur and Eurogames imprints, although they were not used for new original publications according to the reference material. In 2016, Asmodee acquired the English-language rights to the Catan game line from Mayfair Games and created Catan Studio. That same year it acquired Bergsala Enigma, a Nordic and Dutch games developer and distributor. The business was rebranded as Enigma Distribution, later absorbed into Asmodee and renamed Asmodee Nordic. These moves expanded the group’s presence in northern Europe, the Netherlands and eastern European markets. Eurazeo began seeking a buyer in 2018 and sold Asmodee to PAI Partners for approximately €1.2 billion. During the PAI period, the group expanded beyond physical games. It launched Aconyte in 2020 as a publisher of fiction tied to game settings and licensed properties. It also sold The Lagoon Group to University Games in 2020, placing Lagoon under University Games UK. Digital adaptations developed as a parallel business. Asmodee and its acquired companies published electronic versions of tabletop titles, using technology developed for earlier Days of Wonder digital products. By early 2017, the group’s digital catalog included adaptations such as Mysterium and Potion Explosion. Fantasy Flight Interactive was formed in 2017 to adapt Fantasy Flight properties, including The Lord of the Rings: Adventure Card Game and The Lord of the Rings: Journeys in Middle-earth. The studio closed in January 2020 amid company-wide layoffs. Asmodee then opened its catalog more broadly to external developers through licensing arrangements. Asmodee Digital was renamed Twin Sails Interactive in August 2022 and spun off in April 2025. Embracer Group launched a €2.75 billion takeover bid in 2021 and completed the acquisition on 8 March 2022. Embracer subsequently announced in 2024 that it would separate into three publicly traded companies. Asmodee Group AB was formed in Karlstad, Sweden, to hold and manage Asmodee assets. In February 2025, Asmodee announced plans to start trading on Nasdaq Stockholm, marking the completion of its separation from Embracer. The company’s contemporary identity is therefore that of a global tabletop publishing and distribution group, with digital activity increasingly organized outside its core business.
