Overview
ASML is a Dutch multinational company and the world's dominant supplier of photolithography systems used to manufacture semiconductor chips. It was established in 1984 as a joint venture between Philips and ASM International, and is headquartered in Veldhoven, the Netherlands. The company sells lithography machines, metrology and inspection tools, and related software and services to chipmakers around the world. ASML's product line spans older i-line, KrF and ArF lithography systems, immersion lithography, and — most importantly — extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. ASML is the only commercial supplier of EUV scanners, which are required to pattern the most advanced logic and memory chips. This near-monopoly position makes ASML a critical chokepoint in the global semiconductor supply chain and a strategically important company for governments and chipmakers alike. ASML is listed on Euronext Amsterdam and on Nasdaq under the ticker ASML. Its customers include the world's largest foundries and memory makers, such as TSMC, Samsung and Intel. The company also provides customer support, upgrades, and refurbished systems, and invests heavily in R&D to extend lithography into the high-NA EUV era. Because of export controls on advanced chipmaking equipment, ASML's sales to certain markets — notably China — have been subject to licensing restrictions imposed by the Dutch and other governments. ASML remains the central equipment supplier to the leading-edge semiconductor industry and a bellwether for global chip capital spending.
History
ASML was founded in 1984 as a joint venture between the Dutch electronics group Philips and ASM International, initially operating as ASM Lithography. The company was created to commercialize Philips' lithography technology and to serve the emerging semiconductor manufacturing industry. In its early years ASML focused on steppers and competed against larger Japanese and American rivals. During the 1990s and 2000s ASML grew into a leading supplier of lithography systems, expanding through product development and acquisitions. It became a public company, listing on Euronext Amsterdam and later on Nasdaq. The company's breakthrough came with immersion lithography in the 2000s, which helped it win share from competitors. ASML's most significant strategic bet was extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography. After years of development, ASML shipped its first EUV systems to customers in the 2010s, and EUV became essential for manufacturing the most advanced chips. ASML's acquisition of Cymer, a supplier of EUV light sources, strengthened its control over the technology. Today ASML is the only supplier of commercial EUV scanners and is developing the next generation of high-NA EUV systems. ASML's history has also been shaped by geopolitics. Export controls on advanced chipmaking equipment, particularly affecting sales to China, have become a major factor in the company's business planning. Despite these constraints, ASML remains the central equipment supplier to the leading-edge semiconductor industry.
