Overview

Asiera (pronounced a-seer-a) is an Irish organisation that delivers information and communications technology (ICT) shared services, high-speed internet connectivity and digital infrastructure to Ireland's education and research community. Its name stands for "Advancing Services for Irish Education, Research and Academia." The organisation was created in January 2026 when HEAnet and EduCampus came together as one unified body, following a merger completed on 31 December 2025. It traces its roots to 1983, when HEAnet was established through collaboration between Ireland's higher education institutions to build a shared national research and education network. Asiera serves clients across every level of the Irish education and research sector, including universities, institutes of technology, third-level and further education colleges, Education and Training Boards (ETBs), schools and other educational or research organisations. Its national education and research network supports more than 1.3 million students and researchers and over 175,000 staff — more than 1.5 million people in total. In addition, it provides business-critical management information systems to over 140,000 students and 20,000 staff across Ireland's universities, technological universities, institutes of technology and colleges. The organisation's service portfolio spans secure connectivity, shared digital services, cybersecurity, cloud solutions, enterprise platforms and research infrastructure. By uniting the strengths of HEAnet and EduCampus, Asiera aims to build an end-to-end digital ecosystem for Irish education and research, ensuring that learners, educators and researchers have access to world-class technologies and services. It is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, and is a non-commercial, sector-focused provider rather than a conventional for-profit enterprise.

History

Asiera's history begins with HEAnet, which was established in 1983 through collaboration between Ireland's higher education institutions. This formative period, spanning 1983 to 1992, created the foundations for national connectivity and sector collaboration, establishing the principles of shared national research and education networking in Ireland. Over the following decades, HEAnet evolved from a collaborative network into the trusted provider of national digital infrastructure and shared ICT services for the Irish education and research community. Alongside HEAnet's journey, EduCampus Services emerged as a specialist provider of enterprise systems and digital solutions, supporting institutions with secure, scalable and transformative technologies. EduCampus focused on business-critical management information systems and enterprise platforms for universities, technological universities, institutes of technology and colleges. In January 2026, HEAnet and EduCampus came together to form Asiera (Advancing Services for Ireland's Education & Research Academia), bringing together more than 40 years of expertise, trusted relationships and sector knowledge. The merger was completed on 31 December 2025. The new unified organisation continues the mission of enabling education and research through secure connectivity, shared digital services, cybersecurity, cloud solutions, enterprise platforms and research infrastructure. Today, Asiera's national education and research network supports more than 1.3 million students and researchers and over 175,000 staff across Ireland's schools, ETBs and higher education institutions — more than 1.5 million people in total. It also provides business-critical management information systems to over 140,000 students and 20,000 staff across Ireland's universities, technological universities, institutes of technology and colleges. The organisation is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, and serves clients from all levels of the Irish education and research sector.
