Overview
Asian Paints Ltd is an Indian multinational company headquartered in Mumbai. It manufactures, markets and distributes decorative and industrial paints, coatings and related products, while also operating in home décor, modular kitchens, bathroom fittings, lighting, interior design and related home-improvement services. The company is widely identified with the development of India's modern consumer-paint market and is India's largest paint company by market share according to the cited reference material. The business began in February 1942 in a garage in Gaiwadi, Girgaon, Mumbai, where four friends—Champaklal Choksey, Chimanlal Choksi, Suryakant Dani and Arvind Vakil—set up a paint venture during a period when wartime import restrictions limited the availability of imported paints. The company used this opening to compete with established foreign manufacturers and Shalimar Paints. By 1952 it had reported turnover of ₹23 crore, although profitability was still modest, and by 1967 it had become India's leading paint manufacturer. Asian Paints built its domestic reputation through broad distribution, consumer-oriented branding and products positioned for different income segments. Its portfolio has included decorative emulsions, distempers, exterior paints, wood finishes, waterproofing products and industrial coatings. Product names such as Tractor, Royale and Apex became important consumer franchises. The company also developed distinctive marketing assets, including the Gattu mascot, introduced in 1954, and the later household-focused proposition “Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai,” which connected paint purchases with personal identity and family life rather than treating paint as merely a construction material. From the late 1970s, Asian Paints expanded beyond India. It established an overseas subsidiary in Fiji in 1978, entered Nepal in 1983 and subsequently used acquisitions and joint ventures to build a presence across South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, the Caribbean and the South Pacific. Important transactions included the acquisition of Sri Lankan paint company Delmege Forsyth in 1999, the purchase of stakes in SCIB Chemicals in Egypt and Berger International Singapore in 2002, the acquisition of Taubmans Paints in Fiji and Samoa in 2003, and later investments in Ethiopia and Sri Lanka. Some markets were exited or reduced when operations were loss-making, including Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand and China by 2010. In India, the company broadened its addressable market during the 2010s by entering home improvement and décor. It acquired Sleek International, a modular-kitchen business, and Ess Ess, a bathroom-fittings company. It later invested in White Teak, a decorative-lighting company, and in 2020 launched Beautiful Homes, a personalized interior-design service supported by experiential studios. This strategy positioned Asian Paints as more than a paint supplier: it became a provider of coordinated surfaces, colors, décor products, fixtures and design assistance for residential interiors. The group operates manufacturing facilities in multiple countries and, according to the cited reference, has 27 paint-manufacturing facilities across 15 countries serving consumers in more than 60 countries. Its business remains anchored in Indian decorative paints, but its international subsidiaries and home-improvement activities provide additional geographic and category reach. The company is publicly listed in India under the ticker ASIANPAINT. The controlling influence historically associated with the four founder families has remained an important part of its corporate identity, although the company is a listed enterprise with broader public and institutional ownership.
History
Asian Paints was founded in February 1942 by Champaklal Choksey, Chimanlal Choksi, Suryakant Dani and Arvind Vakil in a garage in Gaiwadi, Girgaon, Mumbai. Its early growth was assisted by wartime conditions: restrictions on paint imports during World War II and the Quit India Movement reduced the availability of imported products, leaving domestic customers with fewer alternatives. Asian Paints used the opportunity to build a local manufacturing and distribution business. It reported turnover of ₹23 crore in 1952, though its profit-before-tax margin was only about 2%, and became India's leading paint manufacturer by 1967. The company's domestic development was closely connected to consumer marketing. In the 1950s it promoted Tractor Distemper, including a washable formulation positioned between inexpensive dry distemper and more costly plastic emulsions. The slogan “Don't lose your temper, use Tractor Distemper” gave the product a memorable mass-market identity. In 1954 the company introduced Gattu, a mischievous boy holding a paint bucket, created by cartoonist R. K. Laxman. Gattu became one of the most recognizable symbols in Indian paint advertising and helped make the brand accessible to middle-class households. In the 1980s, the company introduced the festive and emotionally oriented line “Har Ghar Kuch Kehta Hai,” translating approximately as “Every home has a story to tell.” Asian Paints began international expansion in 1978 with an overseas subsidiary in Fiji and entered Nepal in 1983. Its international strategy later combined subsidiaries, joint ventures and acquisitions. In 1999 it acquired Sri Lanka's second-largest paint company, Delmege Forsyth & Co. In 2000 it entered Oman through a joint venture with the Al Hassan Group. In 2002 it acquired 60% of Egyptian manufacturer SCIB Chemicals and bought 50.1% of Singapore-listed Berger International, whose operations covered a number of countries in Southeast Asia, West Asia, the Caribbean, China and Malta. It entered Bangladesh through a joint venture with Confidence Group in the same year. In 2003 it acquired Taubmans Paints, adding operations in Fiji and Samoa to its existing South Pacific presence under the Apco Coatings name. The overseas portfolio was subsequently reshaped. Asian Paints sold its Malta stake in 2004, ending its only European venture at that time, and by 2010 had discontinued loss-making operations in Malaysia, Hong Kong, Thailand and China. It increased its Berger International Singapore holding to 96.48% in 2013 and entered Indonesia through that subsidiary in 2014. Further expansion included a 51% controlling investment in Ethiopia's Kadisco Paint in 2015 and the full acquisition of Sri Lankan Causeway Paints in 2017. During the 2010s and 2020s Asian Paints broadened its definition of the home-painting business. In India it acquired Sleek International, a modular-kitchen manufacturer, and Ess Ess, a bathroom-fittings company. It launched Beautiful Homes in 2020 as a personalized interior-design service and developed studios intended to let consumers experience coordinated design solutions. In 2022 it acquired 49% of decorative-lighting company White Teak and increased the holding by a further 11% in 2023. These moves complemented the core coatings business with kitchens, bath fittings, lighting, décor and design services. The company also continued to invest in brand-led color expertise. ColourNext, an annual color and material-forecasting program introduced in 2004, was developed as a locally relevant design and trend platform rather than simply a product advertisement. In the 2000s Asian Paints refreshed its corporate identity, retired Gattu as its principal mascot and later adopted a shorter AP mnemonic in its visual identity. According to the cited reference material, the group now has 27 paint-manufacturing facilities in 15 countries and serves consumers in more than 60 countries. Its central market remains India, where it combines extensive distribution with decorative paints, coatings, home-improvement products and professional design services.
