Overview
Stiftung Asienhaus (Asia House Foundation) is a German non-profit foundation and non-governmental organization with a focus on Asia. It was founded in 1992 in Essen under the name Asienstiftung by Günter Freudenberg and the member organizations Korea-Verband, Philippinenbüro, and Südostasien-Informationsstelle. Today it is headquartered in Cologne. The foundation works to strengthen civil society positions by building and expanding networks and bridging civil societies in Asia and Europe. Its thematic focus includes developments in Asian countries and the situation of their people, as well as critical monitoring of relations between the EU/Germany and Asian countries. Its development policy work includes analyses, educational events, dialogue programs, and lobbying and advocacy. Its country focuses are China, Indonesia, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Timor-Leste, extended through former member organizations and since 2018 additional sponsorships to Korea, the Philippines, Nepal, and Northeast India. The foundation runs the blog "Stimmen aus China" (Voices from China), which, according to its self-description, aims to counter the one-sided portrayal of German media; the blog became dormant during the Covid-19 pandemic. Together with philippinenbüro e.V., it publishes the Südostasien Magazin, which has been published digitally since 2018. In 2018 it took over sponsorship of the Nepal Dialog Forum, and in 2022 of the North East India Forum.
