History

The Asia Democracy Network (ADN) was established through a series of consultations and preparatory meetings among Asian civil society organizations and democracy advocates. The impetus came at the 7th World Movement for Democracy Global Assembly held in Lima, Peru, from October 14 to 17, 2012, where multi-stakeholder attendees from Asia reached a consensus that a regional democracy network was needed to strengthen democracy in the region. It was decided that preparatory work would be undertaken to design such a network. That preparatory work came to fruition at the 7th Community of Democracies Ministerial Conference in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from April 27 to 29, 2013, when Asian stakeholders agreed to establish a democracy network. The network was envisioned as a platform for like-minded democracy advocates to work together to promote and defend democracy. A task force was established to formulate the foundation for launching an official network. The task force, consisting of civil society organizations from Asia, met in Seoul, South Korea, on October 4, 2013, and worked together over the course of seven months to develop the network's structure and launch. Since its founding, ADN has grown into a regional organization of more than 300 civil society groups active in more than 40 countries in Asia. It has developed flagship programs such as the Asia Democracy Chronicles, Asia Democracy Academy, Asia Youth Assembly, and Asia Democracy Forums, and engages in international advocacy, campaigns, and publications.
