Overview

Asbury is a supplier of graphite, carbon materials, cokes & coals, coatings, and advanced solutions for critical industrial and specialty applications. It traces its origin to 1895, when Harry M. Riddle founded what became Asbury Graphite Mills in Asbury, New Jersey. The company states it has been under family leadership for four generations and over 130 years, and that it has evolved into Asbury Advanced Materials, serving industries including specialty polymers, thermal management, electronics, aerospace, and other high-performance industrial applications.

History

In 1895, during the Industrial Revolution, Harry M. Riddle founded what became Asbury Graphite Mills in Asbury, New Jersey. Riddle leased a relative’s aging flour mill—powered by the Musconetcong River—and converted it into a graphite refining operation. He sourced material from a Rhode Island mine and imported graphite from Korea and Ceylon, with barrels making their final miles by horse and buggy. By building relationships with foundries and manufacturers, he grew sales from 36 to 144 tons in three years, purchasing the mill outright in 1903. Subsequent generations carried the business forward: son Harry Jr. (“Marvin”) joined in 1914 and led through both World Wars, when military demand for graphite surged, while grandson Harry M. Riddle III, a Lafayette metallurgy graduate, joined in 1951. A guiding philosophy spanned the generations: Asbury would remain a basic supplier of refined graphite rather than compete with its customers, growing instead through strategically located acquisitions that minimized transportation costs. This drove decades of expansion into Detroit, Mexico, California, Canada, Louisiana, and beyond, plus diversification into anthracite and calcined coke. The fourth generation arrived when Stephen A. Riddle was named president in 1995, the company’s centennial. For more than 130 years, Asbury has built a reputation for quality and sourcing expertise, evolving into Asbury Advanced Materials, now serving electronics, aerospace, and high-performance industrial markets.
