Overview
ASAHI EITO Holdings Co., Ltd. is a Japanese holding company headquartered in Chuo-ku, Osaka, listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Standard Market under the ticker 5341. Its origins trace to a roof-tile manufacturing business said to have begun in the Sumiyoshi area of Osaka during the Kyoho era of the Edo period, and its modern corporate form dates to the establishment of Tanji Seito Co., Ltd. in December 1950. The company renamed itself Asahi Eito Co., Ltd. in 1964 and built a business around sanitary ceramics — toilets, urinals, washstands and related plumbing fixtures — becoming, by its own account and Wikipedia's, a mid-tier sanitary-ware manufacturer behind TOTO and LIXIL (formerly INAX). The group is known in particular for simple water-flush (simplified flush) toilets suited to areas with underdeveloped sewerage, and it remains one of the few Japanese makers still producing non-water-flush (vault/pit) toilets. Over the decades it expanded into warm-water washing toilet seats, system washstands, water-saving toilets and welfare equipment such as wheelchair-accessible washstands and care beds. After closing its main Sakai plant in 2009, production shifted largely to overseas contract manufacturing and procurement in Vietnam, China and South Korea, with development and assembly handled at its Kagawa facility. In 2022 the company launched a diversification strategy, repositioning itself as a 'housing and living' creation group and acquiring or investing in several subsidiaries in real estate brokerage, solar power and electrical-system installation, drone schools and childcare, building coatings and functional chemicals. In 2023 it moved to a holding-company structure and changed its name to ASAHI EITO Holdings Co., Ltd., spinning off the operating sanitary-ware business into Asahi Eito Co., Ltd. The group has also announced a new venture into rare gases such as helium and xenon, and in 2025 pursued a capital and business alliance with ECEM Singapore Pte. Ltd. The company has faced a notable governance scandal: in 2022 former president Koji Machimoto and a former executive were arrested and convicted of insider trading related to undisclosed information about a business tie-up with Yamada Denki. Today ASAHI EITO Holdings presents itself as a diversified 'housing and living' group while retaining its legacy sanitary-ware brand and its position as a listed small-cap on the TSE Standard Market.
History
The origins of ASAHI EITO Holdings are traced by the company to the Kyoho era of the Edo period (roughly 1716–1735), when roof tiles were manufactured and sold in the Dairyo area of Settsu Province, today part of Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka. Over the following centuries the business moved through red brick, clay pipes and ceramic pipes, and in 1926 began producing blue-glazed non-water-flush toilet bowls. In 1935 an Osaka sanitary-ware factory was built and production of sanitary ceramics began. The modern company was established in December 1950 as Tanji Seito Co., Ltd. in Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka, inheriting the sanitary-ware manufacturing operations of Tanji Seito-sho with capital of 7 million yen. In 1964 it changed its name to Asahi Eito Co., Ltd., aligning its corporate name with its long-used 'Asahi' brand mark featuring a rising-sun design. A Mihara factory was built in 1965 in what is now Mihara-ku, Sakai, and a Fukuoka office opened in 1967. The company listed on the Osaka Securities Exchange Second Section in 1967 (the company history page gives November 1967; Wikipedia gives 1966). Through the 1970s and 1980s the company introduced products that defined its niche: the tankless simple water-flush toilet 'New Let' in 1976, warm-water washing toilet seats in 1981, the tank-type simple water-flush toilet 'Sun Clean' in 1982, and system washstands in 1991. The 'Sun Wash' warm-water washing toilet seat followed in 1995. In 1981 the head office moved to Mihara-cho, Minamikawachi District, Osaka (now Mihara-ku, Sakai). ISO 9001 certification was obtained in 2001, and the water-saving toilet 'eddy' launched in 2007. In 2009 the company closed its main sanitary-ware plant, shifting toward overseas contract manufacturing and procurement, principally in Vietnam, China and South Korea, with development and assembly at its Kagawa facility. A Vietnamese sales subsidiary, VINA ASAHI Co., Ltd., was established in Ho Chi Minh City in 2011. Following the integration of the Osaka and Tokyo stock exchange cash markets, the company moved to the Tokyo Stock Exchange Second Section in 2013, and in 2016 relocated its head office to Chuo-ku, Osaka while consolidating production and logistics at the Kagawa center. A subsidiary, Asahi Home Techno Co., Ltd., was established in Fukuoka in 2016. A turning point came in 2022, when the company adopted a diversification strategy to become a 'housing and living' creation group. It invested in and made subsidiaries of Tomo Ki Trading (renamed Asahi Ninos Co., Ltd. in April 2022), Chami Corporation, and Nihon Life Elevation (renamed Asahi Elevation Co., Ltd.). It also moved to the Tokyo Stock Exchange Standard Market following the exchange's market-segment review. In 2023 the company changed its name to ASAHI EITO Holdings Co., Ltd. and transitioned to a holding-company structure, spinning off Asahi Eito Co., Ltd. as the operating sanitary-ware business. It also made Flagships Co., Ltd. and Yamamoto Yogyo Kako Co., Ltd. subsidiaries, divested Chami Corporation, and established Asahi Pure Chem Co., Ltd. In 2024 it made Flagships a wholly owned subsidiary. In 2025 it announced a capital and business alliance with ECEM Singapore Pte. Ltd., later canceling the planned third-party allotment capital increase while continuing the business tie-up. In 2022 the company was hit by a governance scandal: former president Koji Machimoto and a former executive were arrested by the Osaka District Public Prosecutors Office special investigation unit on suspicion of insider trading related to undisclosed information about a business tie-up with Yamada Denki, and were convicted. Machimoto received a suspended prison sentence and fines. The group has since continued to diversify, announcing a new venture into rare gases such as helium and xenon.
