History
The history of Ars Electronica begins in the 1970s, when heavy industry in Linz, Austria, was slipping into crisis. In 1973, the first oil crisis marked a major turning point in Europe's economic development, and from 1975 onwards the effects of the international steel crisis and the accompanying price collapse reached Austria and Linz. By the late 1970s the outlook was increasingly bleak. On September 18, 1979, the SPA 12 robot flown in from the US gave the opening speech at the very first Ars Electronica Festival. Launched in 1979 as a daring experiment, Ars Electronica has developed into a global ecosystem characterized by continuous change, collaborative thinking, and the ambition to actively shape the future. Since 1979, it has analyzed digital transformation and its impact on society. Today, Ars Electronica is more than a festival or a museum—it functions like a living ecosystem in which different areas, projects, and people interact, inspire each other, and ensure that new things are constantly being created. More than 200 people from diverse countries, cultures, and disciplines make up Ars Electronica.
