Overview

Arnolfini is an arts centre and gallery in Bristol, United Kingdom, describing itself as Bristol's International Centre for Contemporary Arts. It was founded in 1961, with Jeremy Rees as founding Director, and its home is at Bush House, 16 Narrow Quay, Bristol. Its programme engages with the ideas and work of contemporary artists working in many different forms and disciplines, and includes exhibitions, talks, music, performance, family and workshop activities, and tours.

History

Arnolfini was founded in 1961. Its founding Director, Jeremy Rees, wrote that 'Arnolfini is about challenging perceptions', and said he had wanted to put an inscription above the door reading 'Enjoy yourself!' — a phrase the organisation has since added to the entrance of its home at Bush House. Since its founding, Arnolfini states it has shown the work of tens of thousands of artists from all over the world to tens of millions of people in Bristol, citing artists such as Paula Rego, Jannis Kounellis, John Akomfrah, Grayson Perry, Rachel Whiteread, Peter Doig, Richard Long, Veronica Ryan, Chantal Joffe, Sonia Boyce and Frank Bowling, as well as supporting talent from in and around Bristol. This history is documented in its archive, a collection including curatorial files, publicity material, and photographic, moving image and audio documentation; most of the archive is now available to view at Bristol Archives, while work continues to make the remainder publicly accessible.
