History
Armstrong Teasdale traces its origins to Jan. 1, 1901, when business lawyers Thomas Harper Cobbs and John E. Bishop formed the law partnership Bishop and Cobbs in St. Louis. New partners were added regularly in the early years; in 1927 William Armstrong joined as an associate, became a partner in 1931, and Armstrong was added to the firm name in 1939. In 1948 Kenneth Teasdale, a well-known St. Louis-based trial lawyer and friend of William Armstrong, joined the firm, and in 1949 Teasdale was added to the firm name. William H. Webster joined the firm in 1950 and left in 1970. In 1964 Kenneth Teasdale's son, Kenneth S.F. Teasdale, joined after a career in Washington, D.C. with the U.S. Department of Justice. In 1987 Steve Cousins was named the first African-American partner at the firm. In 1987-1988 the firm merged with the St. Louis firm Schlafly, Griesedieck, Toft & Virtel, becoming Armstrong, Teasdale, Kramer, Vaughan & Schlafly, and grew to 83 lawyers; by the end of the following year it was the third-largest law firm in the St. Louis area based on the number of lawyers. The firm states it now has more than 120 years of experience and more than 200 lawyers across 11 offices.
