Overview

Ario Kawaguchi (アリオ川口) is a large shopping center located in the Ribbon City redevelopment area of Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture, Japan. It opened on November 29, 2005, as the third Ario-branded shopping center. The site was formerly occupied by Sapporo Breweries' Saitama factory, which closed and was redeveloped by the Urban Renaissance Agency into the mixed-use Ribbon City complex, including residential buildings, a fitness club, restaurant zone, and Namikimotomachi Park (Art Park) with the Kawaguchi City Art Gallery Atria. The mall is operated by Create Link, a subsidiary of York Holdings. It is anchored by Ito-Yokado and features a wide range of tenants including Disney Store, Tower Records, Akachan Honpo, Joshin, ABC-Mart, Loft, and a MOVIX cinema complex with nine screens. The facility serves as a regional shopping and entertainment hub, offering fashion, food, lifestyle goods, and services. It has been managed by Parco in its early years before transitioning to Seven & i Create Link (now Create Link). The mall remains active and is the only Ito-Yokado store still operating in Kawaguchi city as of 2025.

History

Ario Kawaguchi opened on November 29, 2005, on the site of the former Sapporo Breweries Saitama factory, which had closed. The area was redeveloped by the Urban Renaissance Agency as the mixed-use "Ribbon City" complex, which includes residential buildings, a fitness club, restaurant zone, and Namikimotomachi Park (Art Park) with the Kawaguchi City Art Gallery Atria. Ario Kawaguchi was the third Ario shopping center to open. It was also the third Ito-Yokado store in the city, with the Kawaguchi Ekimae and Nishi-Kawaguchi stores within a 1 km radius. The Kawaguchi Ekimae store was downsized to a food-only store and renamed Kawaguchi Ekimae when the new Ito-Yokado opened inside Ario Kawaguchi. However, in November 2008 it was converted to "The Price Kawaguchi" and closed on May 19, 2019. The Nishi-Kawaguchi store, which opened in 1974, was also converted to "The Price Kawaguchi" in 2009, then reopened as "Ito-Yokado Nishi-Kawaguchi" in December 2020, but closed on February 24, 2025. As a result, the only Ito-Yokado store still operating in the city is the one inside Ario Kawaguchi. For the first few years after opening, Parco was contracted for property management, but later this was changed to Seven & i Create Link (now Create Link). The mall has a MOVIX cinema complex on the third floor, operated by Shochiku Multiplex Theaters, with 9 screens and 1,950 seats (including 19 wheelchair spaces). Before MOVIX Kawaguchi opened, there were no cinemas in the city, and the opening was realized after many requests for a cinema in a survey conducted by Ito-Yokado among citizens. On July 26, 2013, a fire broke out at around 12:20 PM from a yakiniku restaurant "Li-san no Daidokoro" on the third floor, burning one table and surrounding wall, and was extinguished about 1 hour and 40 minutes later. About 1,800 shoppers were in the mall at the time, but no one was injured.
