History

Arima Computer Corporation was founded in 1989, specializing in the production of computers, including notebooks. In 1994, it issued shares, and in 1998 it listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange. In 1999, it established Arima Communications, a division focused on portable electronics such as mobile phones and smartphones. In 2006, Arima aimed to increase mobile phone production volumes through ODM contracts with Japanese and European manufacturers. However, in 2007 its performance declined, with 9.5 million devices and $60.2 million in profit. Growth was planned for 2008: Arima manufactured devices for LG Electronics and Sony Ericsson (together 90% of production), as well as for several smaller companies. In 2008, Arima divested its loss-making ODM notebook and server manufacturing division, selling it to Flextronics for $191.2 million. In 2007, Arima EcoEnergy Technologies and Arima Lasers were created, marking the company's entry into the optoelectronics and solar energy markets. In 2008, it was renamed Arima Photovoltaic & Optical Corporation. In the first quarter of 2011, Motorola orders accounted for 35–40% of Arima's total phone shipments, while Sony Ericsson and LG Electronics accounted for 30–35% and 25–30% respectively. Arima has produced button phones, smartphones, tablets, and notebooks for other companies, and for a time also produced devices under its own brand. In 2004, it released the Arima U300, one of the world's first smartphones with a rotating camera. In 2006–2008, Sony Ericsson and Motorola were key customers of major Taiwanese manufacturers including Arima. In 2018, the Yandex.Phone, produced at an Arima factory, entered the Russian market.
