Overview
Arheološki vestnik (often abbreviated AV) is the central Slovenian scholarly journal for archaeology, founded in 1950 and published continuously since then. It is edited and issued by the Institute of Archaeology of the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts (ZRC SAZU), with publishing handled by Založba ZRC and SAZU as co-publisher. The journal describes itself as a Slovenian scientific review for archaeology with an interdisciplinary and international orientation, serving as a forum for discussion of archaeological topics and related research fields such as ancient Greek and Roman history, epigraphy, numismatics, anthropology, archaeozoology, archaeobotany, archaeoastronomy and palaeoenvironmental studies. Geographically, Arheološki vestnik focuses on the eastern Alpine, northern Adriatic, Pannonian and western Balkan regions, with a core emphasis on Slovenian and neighbouring territory. Chronologically it covers the periods from prehistory through antiquity to the end of the Middle Ages. It is open to discussion and to different theoretical perspectives, and it also publishes thematic sections of papers from scholarly conferences and meetings. The journal appears once a year, usually in May, and is indexed in major international databases including AHCI (Arts and Humanities Citation Index), EBSCO, ERIH PLUS (European Reference Index for the Humanities), Scopus and ANVUR. Its editorial board includes scholars from Slovenia and abroad, reflecting its international scope. The journal is published in open-access form through the ZRC SAZU journal platform, with print and digital ISSNs. It remains an active, state-supported academic publication and a key reference for archaeology in the south-eastern Alpine and western Balkan area.
