Overview

Argemmios Editions (Éditions Argemmios) was a small French independent publishing house dedicated to fantasy and the fantastic, founded in 2007 by author Nathalie Dau and based in Saussay-la-Campagne in Normandy. It published its first title, Nathalie Dau's own novel Les Débris du Chaudron, on 15 May 2008, and over the following years built a catalogue of novels, novellas, short-story collections, artbooks, poetry, anthologies and children's illustrated book-and-CD sets, as well as a small number of bandes dessinées. Its output was deliberately niche: it favoured imaginative fiction, mythological anthologies and illustrated youth titles, and it ran several named collections such as Périples Mythologiques and Bouts d'Cailloux. The house also acted as a patron of genre short fiction through its anthologies, whose stories won the Prix Imaginales 2010 and the Prix Merlin 2010, while one of its children's picture books took the Prix Oriande 2012 in the illustrated youth album category. Despite efforts to find a successor, the publisher was forced to cease activity in early 2014 because of the owner's health problems. The company was dissolved on 18 February 2015 and struck off the register on 14 September 2015. Argemmios is remembered as a short-lived but award-recognised contributor to French fantasy publishing in the late 2000s and early 2010s.

History

Éditions Argemmios was created in 2007 by Nathalie Dau, a French author of fantasy, and established in Saussay-la-Campagne. The house's first publication was Dau's own novel Les Débris du Chaudron, released on 15 May 2008. From the outset Argemmios positioned itself as a specialist in fantasy and the fantastic, and it quickly expanded beyond single-author novels into collective works and illustrated projects. In 2009 it published Pierre Gévart's Et cette porte, là-bas, qui se fermait... and launched the mythological anthology Les Héritiers d'Homère, the first volume in its Périples Mythologiques collection; that anthology's stories went on to win both the Prix Imaginales 2010 and the Prix Merlin 2010 for short fiction. The same year saw the beginning of its children's line, Bouts d'Cailloux, with the book-and-CD titles Voir avec le Cœur and Grisemine, le petit chat qui voulait voler. The catalogue grew through 2010 with Charlotte Bousquet's Llorona On The Rocks, Denis Labbé's Marelle d'Ombres, the collective tribute Flammagories, hommage à Nicholas Lens, the youth anthology Il était 7 fois and the first comics by Mathieu Coudray, Les Zozios, T1 and Sticker la Mouche. In 2011 Argemmios published Viviane Etrivert's Masky and the award-winning children's picture book Brûlot le dragonneau by Valérie Frances and Christian Simon with illustrations by Sophie Léta, which in 2012 received the Prix Oriande in the illustrated youth album category. The following year brought Marie Fontaine and Tony Beaufils's Qantice : La Cosmocinésie ou les Remuements des mondes, Alain Delbe's Sigiriya, le Rocher du Lion and the second Périples Mythologiques anthology, Chants de Totems. In 2013 the house issued Chantal Robillard's Zoo des chimères, the collective Rencontres Imaginaires en Aubrac and the children's title Brûlot et le Louveteau. By then, however, the business was under strain. Although Nathalie Dau sought a buyer or successor to take over the publishing house, no arrangement could be concluded, and Argemmios was forced to cease activity in early 2014 because of the manager's health problems. The company was formally dissolved on 18 February 2015, then liquidated and struck off the register on 14 September 2015. Its backlist and its prize-winning anthologies remain its principal legacy in French fantasy publishing.
