Overview

Arenys.org is a non-profit association dedicated to promoting information and communication technologies (ICT) and the Information Society in the municipalities of Arenys de Mar and Arenys de Munt, in Catalonia, Spain. Formally created in 2002, its origins trace back to 1996 with the creation of the Web d'Arenys and the organization of introductory Internet courses. Its promoters include computer scientists, teachers, and journalists, among them Oriol Ferran, who later served as Secretary of Telecommunications and the Information Society of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The association has been a pioneer in local digital communication. The Web d'Arenys was the first space where web pages with Arenys content were published in April 1996, hosted on the server of Partal, Maresma i Associats. It was there that the term "arenyautes" was coined, now defining members of the local digital community. A mailing list and the arenyautes.cat space, currently organized as a blog system, are reference points for this community. The first version of the arenyautes pages, a tool programmed in PHP before blogs were defined, went online in 2001. Arenys.org has played a significant role in local communication in Arenys. It pioneered the use of audiovisual media over the Internet in Arenys de Mar, making the first audio and video transmissions over the network. It currently maintains VilaWeb-Arenys, the longest-running local edition of VilaWeb. In 2002, the association conducted the first Wi-Fi tests in Arenys de Mar, creating Arenys Sensefils, which began offering broadband Internet access from the bell tower of the Santa Maria church. The experience brought connectivity to about a hundred homes and several public spaces; since 2008 the service has been managed directly by the company Maxen Technologies. The entity has always maintained significant in-person activity, especially oriented toward training and digital literacy. Its premises include a computer classroom, and in recent years it has collaborated in training actions of the city councils of Arenys de Mar, Arenys de Munt, and Sant Iscle de Vallalta. It has periodically organized the "Vespres digitals" in Arenys de Mar, cycles of thematic talks on various current topics. Since 2007, Arenys.org has maintained a close relationship with La Bressola, the North Catalan schools. Initially they collaborated on the musical project "Musiquetes per la Bressola" and currently on the promotion of Espai Bressola, where Arenys.org contributes its experience in dynamizing digital communities.
