It has been published since 1999 and carries the ISSN 1392-737X and e-ISSN 2669-2449. The journal was founded and is prepared by the Institute of the Lithuanian Language together with the universities of Klaipėda, Šiauliai, Vilnius and Vytautas Magnus, responding to growing international scholarly interest in old Lithuanian and Lithuania-written texts. Its editor-in-chief is Giedrius Subačius. The journal's core mission is the history of language and its social and cultural context. Its declared research directions include the history of attitudes toward language and writing, the history of the Lithuanian written language and its variants, the history of ideas about the formation of standard Lithuanian, the history of Lithuanian language research, philological-textological and linguistic analysis of older Lithuanian sources, translation history, editing history, and the printing history of Lithuanian works. It also gives attention to adjacent fields such as history, historiography and literary studies. Archivum Lithuanicum publishes original-language contributions by Lithuanian, German, Polish, American and other scholars. Each volume is organized into sections for articles, publications, reviews, and discussions and overviews. The first two volumes were issued in Lithuania; from the third volume onward the journal has also been published and distributed in Europe and America by the German academic book publisher Harrassowitz Verlag, based in Wiesbaden. The journal is currently hosted and presented by the Lithuanian Institute of History, which maintains its editorial pages, archive of past issues and ethical principles.
