Overview

The Archivio Diocesano dei Marsi (Diocesan Archive of the Marsi) is the historical archive of the Diocese of Avezzano, located in the seminary buildings of Avezzano in the Abruzzo region of Italy. It preserves the documentary heritage of the diocese, whose original seat was in Pescina. Following the 1915 earthquake, Bishop Pio Marcello Bagnoli decided to move the diocesan offices to Avezzano, but those premises were bombed during the Second World War. As a result, the archival holdings consisted of disordered paper material exposed to the elements, which endangered their preservation. In the 1980s, Professor Angelo Melchiorre and a small team, at the request of Bishop Biagio Terrinoni and Chancellor Giulio Lucidi, carried out the arrangement and classification of the archival holdings. On 3 May 1993, also thanks to the intervention of the then superintendent of archival heritage for Abruzzo, Dr. Fiorilli, the Archivio Diocesano dei Marsi was opened to the public. The archival holdings are composed of thirteen sections, improperly called fonds (Fondo A through Fondo N, plus Fondo Parrocchie). To date, twelve sections and part of Fondo D (Avezzano, Celano, Cerchio, Luco, Ortucchio, Pescina, Tagliacozzo and Trasacco) have been catalogued. Since 2008, the Archivio Storico Diocesano dei Marsi has been enrolled in the CEIAr project of the Italian Episcopal Conference, aimed at the computerization and use of documentary material. The person responsible is Don Ennio Gros.
