Overview
Architekt DI Gerhard Hauser is an architecture practice based in Innsbruck, Austria, operating under the website gehauser.at. The firm is led by Gerhard Hauser, a Diplom-Ingenieur and architect, and describes itself as a competent partner in Innsbruck with a team of specialists. Its philosophy is summarised as 'Emotion – Technik – Architektur' (Emotion – Technology – Architecture), emphasising buildings that are coherent wholes in which material execution aligns with idea and purpose. The practice offers a full range of services: project development, site analysis, property valuation, project management, construction supervision and local building inspection, as well as lectures and presentations on energy-efficient building, timber construction, and current architectural developments. The firm has been active since 1989, when Gerhard Hauser began his independence after taking over the office of Arch. Wulfing Hauser. Over the decades it has participated in and won numerous competitions, including first prizes for the Jenbach sports facility, the Breitenbach residential complex, and the Vals primary schools. The office has also engaged in international knowledge transfer, giving lectures in cities such as Innsbruck, Paris, Moscow, Sochi, Harbin, Casablanca, Ljubljana, Lviv, St. Petersburg, and Yekaterinburg, and volunteering for know-how transfer to China, Morocco, and Madagascar. In 2012 it won the Grand Prix of the Jury at ArchMoscow for the project 'House For A Piano Player'. The practice moved to Hallerstrasse in Innsbruck and has increasingly embraced timber construction technology, including an innovative rooftop addition to a house on Museumstrasse in the city centre. As a private firm, it remains owner-led and continues to take on residential, educational, and sports-related architectural projects.
History
The office of Architekt DI Gerhard Hauser traces its origins to 1978, when Gerhard Hauser, together with Arch. DI P. Pontiller, won first prize in a competition for the Jenbach sports facility, including a triple gymnasium and tennis and football courts. In 1988 he won a first prize in an invited competition for a residential complex with 80 units in Breitenbach. In 1989 he took over the office of Arch. Wulfing Hauser and began his independence. The 1990s saw the digitalisation of the office, with the introduction of computers in 1992, and in 1996 a first prize in an invited competition for the new Vals 1 primary school and gymnasium, completed in 1998. From 2006 onwards, Hauser began giving lectures and training sessions on passive house, low-energy building, and timber construction in Innsbruck, Paris, Moscow, Sochi, Harbin (China), Casablanca, Ljubljana, Lviv, St. Petersburg, and Yekaterinburg. He also began voluntary engagement for the transfer of know-how to China, Morocco, and Madagascar. In 2012 the practice won the Grand Prix of the Jury at ArchMoscow for the project 'House For A Piano Player', a competition with 70 international participants. In 2014 a first prize followed for the new Vals 2 primary school, kindergarten, and municipal office. The office moved to Hallerstrasse in Innsbruck, described as a new location and new spirit. In 2015 the firm entered timber construction technology, and in 2017 completed an innovative timber rooftop addition to a house on Museumstrasse in the centre of Innsbruck. As of 2020, the firm states it still has much great work ahead, likening good architects to good wine that improves with age.
