Overview
Archeowieści (archeowiesci.pl) is a Polish popular-science internet portal devoted to archaeology and paleoanthropology. It was founded on 12 June 2006 by Wojciech Pastuszka, an archaeology enthusiast who served as founder and principal author, publishing news about the latest discoveries and research results. Originally launched as an archaeology blog at archeowiesci.blox.pl/html, it was later moved to WordPress. In July 2011 it became a partially paid thematic web portal, with some articles available in full only to subscribers. In 2021, by agreement, stewardship of Archeowieści passed to the Faculty of Archaeology of the University of Warsaw. Since then, the fully free content published on the site has been produced by researchers, doctoral students and students affiliated with that institution, with an editorial board overseeing the portal's activity. The portal's mission is to encourage a broad readership to explore the past and to popularize archaeology. Its main thematic categories are archaeology and paleoanthropology. The site publishes articles on a wide range of archaeological subjects, from early medieval cemeteries in Mazovia and Podlachia with graves enclosed in stone structures, to Roman-era domestic baths and mosaics unearthed in Écija, Spain, to Wari metallurgy at Castillo de Huarmey in Peru, to multi-phase Neolithic and Gallo-Roman burials at Pommerœul in Belgium, and to the Mazovian Center of Metallurgy and associated amber workshops in western Mazovia. An English-language section (archeowiesci.pl/en/) makes selected content available to international readers. For his work running the portal, founder Wojciech Pastuszka received two awards: a prize in the sixth edition of the "Popularyzator Nauki" (Science Popularizer) competition in the Journalist/Editorial Board/Non-scientific Institution category in 2010, organized by the Nauka w Polsce service of PAP in cooperation with the Ministry of Science and Higher Education; and the Krzysztof Dąbrowski Award for the popularization of archaeology in 2011, granted by the Scientific Association of Polish Archaeologists.
