Working Group for Local History

The Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Heimatkunde e.V. (Working Group for Local History) is a German registered association (eingetragener Verein) based in Bad Liebenwerda. It is a non-profit organization focused on the research, documentation, and preservation of the regional history of the former Liebenwerda district (Altkreis Liebenwerda), which existed until 1952, and its successor area within the present-day Elbe-Elster district. The association defines its geographic scope by the historical cohesion of the inhabitants of this area, which dates back to 1816. Its stated mission is to preserve the historically evolved character of the Elbe-Elster region, to explore and document its cultural values, and to promote local history awareness. Key activities include historical research, publishing the annual yearbook "Heimatkalender für das Land zwischen Elbe und Elster" (Local Calendar for the Land between Elbe and Elster), and organizing local history excursions. The association traces its origins to 1930, when 14 local history enthusiasts founded the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Heimatkunde im Kreis Liebenwerda. After the political changes of 1989/90, the association was re-established as a registered association on 30 August 1994. It continues to be active, offering lectures, presentations, and publications, and welcomes new members interested in contributing to its work.

The Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Heimatkunde e.V. traces its roots to 14 June 1930, when 14 local history enthusiasts founded the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Heimatkunde im Kreis Liebenwerda. The primary goal was regional historical research and writing in the Elbe-Elster region, as well as promoting local history in schools and associations. After 1945, historically interested individuals regrouped in the Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Natur- und Heimatfreunde of the Kulturbund zur demokratischen Erneuerung Deutschlands, Kreis Bad Liebenwerda. This group published the Heimatkalender für den Kreis Bad Liebenwerda from 1955 to 1965/66, and later the Jahrbuch Kreis Bad Liebenwerda/Heimatkalender in 1969/70. Following the political changes of 1989/90, the Demokratischer Kulturbund was dissolved in the Bad Liebenwerda district, and numerous local history associations emerged in villages and towns. Culturally and historically interested individuals met at the Kreismuseum Bad Liebenwerda and published Heimatkalender for the district in 1993 and 1994. On 30 August 1994, the local history enthusiasts founded the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Heimatkunde as a registered association. With the dissolution of the Bad Liebenwerda district and the creation of the Elbe-Elster district in the same year, the name of the calendar was changed to "Heimatkalender für den Altkreis Bad Liebenwerda", and from 2002 to "Heimatkalender für das Land zwischen Elbe und Elster" with the subtitle "Heimatkundliches Jahrbuch für den Altkreis Bad Liebenwerda, das Mückenberger Ländchen, Ortrand am Schraden, Falkenberg und Uebigau". The association continues its work to this day, organizing lectures, presentations, and excursions, and publishing its annual calendar.
