Overview

ARB Ulduz was an Azerbaijani television channel that began broadcasting on 15 March 2001 in Ganja under the name Alternativ TV. It was established by the company Alternativ–Tele–Radio MMC, founded on 5 January 2001, with Hikmat Jafar oglu Targuliyev as its founder. The channel initially served Ganja and surrounding districts with cartoons, feature and documentary films, music, and local news through its "Xəbər+" information programme and other shows. Over the years it expanded its broadcast hours, moving to a 24-hour schedule, and in 2013 it became Azerbaijan's first music television channel after a format change. In 2016 it was renamed ARB Ulduz as part of the ARB Media Group. The channel ceased satellite broadcasting in February 2019 due to insufficient advertising revenue, and its broadcasting was officially stopped on 3 March 2019. In May 2021, the National Television and Radio Council decided to terminate its regional television broadcasting licence because it had not been used for 60 days within a year. ARB Ulduz is now defunct.

History

ARB Ulduz originated as Alternativ TV, a television channel that began broadcasting on 15 March 2001 in Ganja, Azerbaijan. The founding company, Alternativ–Tele–Radio MMC, was established on 5 January 2001, with Hikmat Jafar oglu Targuliyev as its founder. The channel's initial purpose was to serve viewers in Ganja and surrounding districts with cartoons, feature and documentary films, music, and local news through its "Xəbər+" information programme and other shows. On 18 April 2001, it moved to a 6-hour broadcast schedule, and from 1 July 2002, broadcast time was increased to 14 hours. The channel's airtime was composed of 39% domestically produced programmes, 46% foreign-produced programmes, and 15% in-house productions. Later, the format was changed and broadcasting switched to a 24-hour schedule. In 2013, after a format change, it became Azerbaijan's first music television channel. From March to May 2014, it was broadcast via ARB's test transmission on the Azerspace-1 satellite and on KATV1, Ailə TV, and ATV Plus cable televisions. In March 2015, it changed its logo and switched to 16:9 format broadcasting. From 18 March 2015 to 11 February 2019, it was broadcast via the Azerspace-1 satellite. On 19 September 2016, the channel's name was changed from Alternativ TV to ARB Ulduz. On 11 February 2019, the thematic music channel ARB Ulduz, part of ARB Media Group, ceased satellite broadcasting on the grounds of "insufficient advertising revenue". On 3 March 2019, ARB Ulduz's broadcasting was officially stopped. At the meeting of the National Television and Radio Council on 24 May 2021, considering that ARB Ulduz's regional television broadcasting had not been carried out for 60 days within 1 year without justification, relevant decisions were adopted to terminate the broadcaster's licence.
