ARAG SE

ARAG SE is the operating holding company of the ARAG Group, a Düsseldorf-based European insurance group controlled by the Faßbender family. The name derives from Allgemeine Rechtsschutzversicherungs Aktiengesellschaft, reflecting the company’s original focus on legal expenses insurance. The suffix SE refers to Societas Europaea, the European company form adopted by the group in December 2011 as its international business expanded. The group began in 1935 as Deutsche Auto-Rechtsschutz-AG, or DARAG, founded by Düsseldorf entrepreneur and attorney Heinrich Faßbender. Its initial product covered motor-vehicle-related legal disputes. Faßbender’s founding idea was that access to legal remedies should not be limited to people with substantial financial resources. In 1948, ARAG broadened legal expenses insurance beyond automobile coverage, creating the basis for the business model that remains central to the group. ARAG later diversified into other insurance sectors. It entered life insurance from 1965 and private health insurance from 1985, using acquisitions as well as organic development to build its portfolio. The life insurance business was sold to Frankfurter Leben Group in 2017, retroactive to 1 January of that year. German health insurance remains represented by ARAG Krankenversicherungs-AG, while ARAG Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG provides composite products such as liability, household contents, accident, pet health, property and business insurance. The latter also has a substantial role in sports insurance, serving amateur and professional athletes. Legal protection remains ARAG’s defining field. The group operates through national subsidiaries and partners in Europe, North America and other markets, and in some countries combines insurance with related legal services. Its international expansion includes the United States, where ARAG developed from a legal insurance operation established in the 1970s; the United Kingdom, where it has operated since 2006 and expanded through the acquisition of D.A.S. UK from Ergo in 2023; Canada, entered in 2016 and expanded through the purchase of DAS’s Canadian operations in 2021; and Ireland, entered in 2019 through the acquisition of D.A.S. legal-expenses operations. ARAG established operations in Australia at the end of 2019 through ARAG Services Australia Pty Ltd, an underwriting agency serving brokers and intermediaries. The group withdrew from that market in 2025 because the business had not developed as expected. In the United Kingdom, the 2023 D.A.S. transaction also brought a law firm into the ARAG organization, strengthening the group’s access to in-house legal expertise. The group’s headquarters have been located in Düsseldorf’s ARAG Tower since 2001. Designed by Lord Norman Foster together with the Düsseldorf practice RKW, the building is a prominent part of the city’s architecture. ARAG is described as Germany’s largest family-owned insurance group and one of the world’s largest legal expenses insurers. At the end of 2024, the group reported more than 6,100 employees, 13.8 million policies and total gross premium income of €2.843 billion. Approximately 9.6 million policies were held outside Germany. ARAG was established in Düsseldorf in 1935 by entrepreneur and attorney Heinrich Faßbender as Deutsche Auto-Rechtsschutz-AG, abbreviated DARAG. The company’s first business was automobile legal expenses insurance. Faßbender’s stated purpose was to make it easier for ordinary citizens to assert their rights, rather than reserving legal remedies for those able to pay legal costs directly. In 1948, the company expanded beyond automobile-related legal protection. This broadened product scope transformed ARAG from a specialist motor legal insurer into a more general legal expenses provider. The company began extending the concept outside Germany in 1962 and subsequently built an international network of subsidiaries and operating companies. Diversification into other insurance sectors followed. ARAG entered life insurance in 1965 and private health insurance in 1985. It also acquired insurers to support these activities. Life insurance was ultimately sold to Frankfurter Leben Group in 2017, with the sale taking effect retroactively from the beginning of that year. Health insurance continues through ARAG Krankenversicherungs-AG, while ARAG Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG operates as the group’s composite insurer. The group’s physical and corporate identity became closely associated with Düsseldorf when it moved into the ARAG Tower in 2001. The building was designed by Lord Norman Foster and the Düsseldorf architectural firm RKW Rhode Kellermann Wawrowsky Architektur + Städtebau. The headquarters symbolize the company’s status as a major Düsseldorf-based insurance group while its business became increasingly international. ARAG adopted the European Company legal form in December 2011, changing from ARAG Allgemeine Rechtsschutz-Versicherungs-AG to ARAG SE. The change reflected the group’s cross-border structure and the continuing expansion of its legal protection operations outside Germany. International growth continued through a combination of new subsidiaries, acquisitions and partnerships. In the United States, the business originated in a legal insurance operation created in 1973 within Midwest Mutual Insurance Company; ARAG acquired that organization in 1989 and established the platform now known as ARAG USA. ARAG entered Canada as an insurance intermediary in 2016 and expanded through the acquisition of DAS’s Canadian operations in 2021. In the United Kingdom, ARAG had operated since 2006 through ARAG plc. It acquired D.A.S. UK from Ergo in 2023, taking on both insurance activities and a law firm. The group entered Ireland in 2019 through the acquisition of D.A.S. legal expenses operations and established ARAG Legal Protection Ltd. in Dublin. The company also attempted to develop business in Australia. ARAG Services Australia Pty Ltd began operations at the end of 2019 as an underwriting agency supplying legal expenses products through brokers and intermediaries. The group withdrew in 2025 after the business did not develop as anticipated. Ownership and leadership have remained closely connected to the founding family. Paul-Otto Faßbender, the founder’s grandson, became chairman of the management board in 2000 and held responsibility for central group functions until 2020. He became chairman of the supervisory board in July 2020 and remains the group’s principal shareholder. Renko Dirksen became speaker of the management board in 2020 and chairman in 2025. By the end of 2024, the wider ARAG Group employed more than 6,100 people, managed 13.8 million policies and reported gross premium income of €2.843 billion. About 9.6 million policies were outside Germany. The group continues to present legal expenses insurance as its core competence, complemented by German private health and composite insurance and a broad international network.
